Hi,

After getting my 744T back from SD to fix a cabling problem, I fired it up to
check sync against my Canon XL2.

I recorded audio and video with the camera to an FS-4 HD and audio with the
744T, both at 48k, for about an hour.

I imported the files to Final Cut Pro. The 744T file was very weird. The
waveform shown on the time line was not in sync with the audio for the very
same track. I dumped the waveform cache, restarted the computer and tried
again. Same problem.

I imported the 744T audio into Pro Tools and the waveform is in sync with the
audio.

Has anyone had this experience?

Regards,

Ty Ford

Double check your FCP project settings?

Thanks Phil,

The audio that's part of the video clip is fine, though.

FCP is famous for applying unintended pull-down without further
notice.

fascinating. Would that make the waveform of a signal be out of sync with its
own audio?

I have had this same problem on a computer with a dying video card-
one thing to remember is that FCP will be playing the frame ahead of
the playhead- and during syncing, nudge over to the frame where the
meters jump up (your slate). If the waveform draws out differently,
disregard it (scary, i know). If your test doesn't have a slate I'd
recommend doing another with one. Put a marker where you hear the
clap, and try to see if the waveform draws out consistently, maybe
with a take that has a couple slates. You may also want to do a test
to see if it is latency with your audio hardware, but I'm skeptical
since it is fine in PT (unless you have it accounted for in your
settings). My shot in the dark last time was that drawing audio
waveforms is low on the list of graphic-crunching priorities.
Also, when you check your sequence settings read all the fine print
as some aren't exactly clear for weather they are film or video
speed.

You didn't mention if you changed other metadata. FCP plays at the
sample rate stamped in the metadata regardless of what rate it was
recorded. I can't recall if it looks at bext or ixml data. Perhaps
when changing the TC stamp, the rate was changed as well.

I decided to try a new production, thinking that somehow the FCP production
itself was corrupt. One other variable, I converted the metadata in the audio
file from 30 ND to 29.97 ND. The video read as 29.97 ND.

I brought the audio into the FCP timeline first, then the video clip. Bingo!
Lined up fine.

So it was either a frame rate/metadata crash, or simply a corrupt FCP
session.

I guess..

Thanks for all of your thoughts on this.

Ty Ford

nope sample rate remained at 48.
