ORTF is my favorite for most stereo recordings, however, it also has it's
disadvantages. It is not 100% mono compatible so there can be some phasing.
A/B has quite a bit of phasing and I personally would not recommend it for
anything other than classical music recordings in a controlled environment
when you really want to hear the room. If you want to be 100% safe then an
X/Y pair would be a good bet. You will get a little less spaciousness than
ORTF but you will keep 100% mono compatibility which may or may not be
important to you. If you decide to go X/Y Rycote has a very nice (expensive)
rig. If you decide to try ORTF my favorite setup is with two MK41 capsules
at 103 degrees with a 10" spacing. This will give you even more spaciousness
than MK4 capsules. If it is not too windy you might get away with Schoeps
W5D windscreens but you may need Baby Ball Gags with Windjammers. These are
not my favorite because you definitely loose some high end response.
