FMJ is based on a novella entitled "The Short Timers" and for the
material included is almost word for word from the book. IIRC, as I
haven't seen the film OR read the book in years, the boot camp part is
so close you can almost read along with the book as it goes, while I
believe the screenplay omits a bit of what happens immediately after
the marines arrive in Vietnam and takes up after they have been there
a while. The author was a fomer marine who served in 'Nam and wrote
the book after his return, so one would assume that he heard
Vietnamese prostitutes use that or similar phrases. Of course the
movie is what brought it into the popular lexicon, bolstered by it's
inclusion as a "sample" in a hip-hop tune.
Hard to say how common it actually was, could have been one whore who
used that as her tagline or a commonly sued phrase. I have read almost
every Vietnam-era novel ever written at some point, including some by
Aussies and other non-American participants, and have never seen that
phrase used anywhere other than that one book, though it could simply
be that other authors didn't get that deeply into the come-ons used by
Asian whores.
