I don't know if I'm going to bother watching the Oscars tonight.
It seems like all four major acting categories are locks (Helen
Mirren; Forrest Whitaker; Eddie Murphy; Jennifer Hudson), and the only
questions to be answered are:
1) What will win Best Picture? (My guess is: "The Queen")
2) Will Martin Scorsese win Best Director? (My guess is: Yes)
Is that worth three hours of my life?
There's an Eisenstein screening tonight and I'll go to that. It ends
at 7:00. Maybe I'll watch the Oscars after "The General Line," and
maybe not.

Hey, its the Oscars. I'll watch. Its a cultural event like the Super
Bowl. Who cares if everyone knows the Colts will clobber the Bears?
Its all about having some friends over and making fun of Hollywood.
Besides, if nothing else, Ellen Degeneres can always be counted upon
to be amusing.

I'll watch the Academy Awards tonight, although I'll probably be the
only one in my household doing so. I make to excuses--I'm addicted to
them--and I'll hope for a Sally Field moment ("You like me! You
really like me!")
Ennio Moricone will receive a much-deserved honorary Oscar--he's
never won one--and I'm looking to Martin Scorsese >hopefully< winning
best director.
As for the acting awards, you can count on at least one surprise
(maybe Peter O'Toole). And as for best picture I'm betting on the
Chaplinesque LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. It's just the kind of picture to
come out of nowhere and win--like MARTY did a half-century ago. >> Stay informed about: The Oscars: To Watch or Not to Watch? |

I always watch the Oscars--it's a tradition and there's a certain warped
curiosity involved.
But Tivo has made it a lot easier. I give the Tivo a headstart, and start
watching an hour or so into the program. That way I can fast-forward through
the commercials, and take my own breaks as I choose them.
I've got a rehearsal this afternoon, and probably won't be able to start
watching until 6:30.
Although Babel was my favorite film of the year, with Little Miss Sunshine
and Letters from Iwo Jima also high on the list, I suspect The Departed will
win Best Picture. The Queen, though I liked it, is IMHO the weakest of the
five.

I'm buried under snow in Wisconsin, so I can't wait to watch Al Gore pick up
his award for the "global warming" doc as our local station runs a crawl of
blizzard warnings and school closings. And they say that irony is dead.

The best part being, he's not entitled to an award or to get up on stage
anyway; he's only credited as 'cast' -- but that ain't gonna stop 'em. >> Stay informed about: The Oscars: To Watch or Not to Watch? |

I never watch the Oscars in their entirety, because attempts to make
the show entertaining usually fail, and most of the acceptance speeches
are really annoying. If I'm curious about one award, I try watching part

It's ridiculous that Scorsese has never won best director. I sometimes
suspect that they'll make him wait for a lifetime achievement award.

If I get close to seeing all of the nominated (for major awards)
movies, I make sure to watch them all. Sometimes I miss a foreign
film when I'm close - because it's not available.
But this year, I didn't see any of them, so I'll read about the awards
in the paper. >> Stay informed about: The Oscars: To Watch or Not to Watch? |
