With TCM about to show "Monsieur V." and "Limelight" this month, I was
hoping to reach my own opinion about that great mystery that has been
kicked around on this group many times before - is Edna Purviance in
any of the films?

Do any of you have - or have any of you ever seen - photos of Edna
when she was older - i.e., in her fifties? Seems to me it would be
much easier to reach an opinion on whether she is in the films if we
ALL had a photo of her we could use as a basis for comparison!!

On page 37 of David Robinson's "CC: Comic Genius" (or "CC: The Art of Comedy" -
UK edition) there is a candid photo of Charlie on the set and in costume for
CITY LIGHTS, explaining something to an attentive Edna. Only problem is A. This
is probably circa 1930 - so not quite late enough and B. We only are treated to
the right profile of her face.

Not even the full right profile, unfortunately.

I've never seen a photo of Edna taken later than this one, or heard of anyone
else seeing one.

In his autobiography, on p. 493, Chaplin says that when he called Edna in
while he was casting _Verdoux_, neither he nor Rollie had seen her for
twenty years, and when he decided not to cast her, he didn't hear from her
again until after he closed the studio. If his memory is correct--and nothing
so far disproves it--then she was not in these later films.

The only thing, Connie, is that Chaplin's memory WAS somewhat less
than 100% regarding such things in his later years. On page 161 of
his "My Life in Pictures," for example, he writes that he could not
remember the name of the "photogenic" elderly white haired lady who
played Edna's mom in "The Immigrant" - and it was of course Kitty
Bradbury, who also played Edna's mom in "The Pilgraim." I guess I am
suggesting that, based on this, Chaplin's memory in his later years of
who did/did not appear in his films is not NECESSARILY dispositive!

Well, I did say "if." :-)

But Chaplin was over ten years older--in his eighties--when he did _My
Life in
Pictures_. Kitty Bradbury had small parts in two of his films fifty
years earlier. Edna was his co-star and companion for eight years, and
had been in
touch with him only ten years before he wrote his autobiography. These
are
details to consider when estimating how good his memory was in the
1960s.

I don't think I agree that the picture in Robinson IS Edna, regardless
of what Robinson says. Anyone else get the "that's not Edna" vibe?

It could be, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I have it from an irrefutable source that the woman in this picture is Minnie
Chaplin, Syd's wife.

Why is that the instant someone claims they have an "irrefutable source" and
then refuses to name them, I instantly don't believe whatever they say?

Is is just me?

Since Syd was working in England during the making of _City Lights_, and then
moved to the south of France, I'm rather skeptical.

In this case you're probably dead right. While we have an excellent view of
the back of the woman's head, it's not much to base an ID on.

Debates lasting weeks around here have been based on even less information,
sad to say.
