This is from the FAQ page of the Pola Negri website:
"Q: Did Pola really love Charlie Chaplin?
A: Not really, although she did, only briefly, allow herself to be
manipulated off her feet by Chaplin, but not without some deep-down and
quickly-corrected reservations. Charlie Chaplin's manipulative and
abusive personality is well documented-the same patterns persist in
each of the surviving memoirs by three of his lovers (Lita Grey,
Georgia Hale, and May Reeves). Chaplin frequently acted out a fantasy
of finding a fresh, naïve, inexperienced little girl and gently
initiating her into womanhood, which is to this day not an uncommon
fantasy amongst men. Pola's personality was that of a proud,
strong-willed, independent fireball on the outside, with a sensitive,
melancholy little girl who wanted someone to put her trust in on the
inside. Chaplin recognized that and saw the tough exterior as an extra
challenge to get to the little girl inside. Pola said that Chaplin's
often childlike personality (which gives so much charm to the Little
Tramp character) appealed to her protective motherly instincts, which
is very typical and understandable. However, Pola was too
strong-willed a personality to be pushed around by Chaplin's polygamy
and his tendencies to heartlessly dispose of or ignore people he might
become vulnerable to. Pola was nobody's victim, and therefore that
relationship was doomed to fail, which it quickly did."
Interesting take on Chaplin, don't you think?

Well, not an original one. We've been hearing the line about
Chaplin, the heartless despoiler of innocent womanhood, for a long
time.
I think it's less revealing about the historical figures the author
is writing of, than about his attitudes toward them.
Chaplin was indeed attracted to a lot of girlish young women, but he
was also interested in women who'd been around the block a few times:
Paulette Goddard, Louise Brooks, Peggy Hopkins Joyce, Marion Davies,
etc. etc. I'd say Pola Negri fell into that category too, but that's
just a guess.

If you give Chaplin two women a month between 1914 when he started at
Keystone and 1943 when he married Oona, that's almost 700 right there.
"Thousands" is a distinct possibility.

Not entirely worng, but lacking in subtlety. Manipulative, yes.
annoying as hell sometimes. Abusive is pushing it. As for the
"Chaplin recognized" stuff, the writer must be a mind reader. And I
doubt what he says about Pola's "little girl" innards. I must say I
can't imagine what about her attracted Chaplin, apart from striking
looks and a rather crude sensuality, though that might have been enough.
The writer is trying to reconcile the affair with Pola with the
claim that Chaplin was only attracted to "little girls." But
since that isn't true, he's spinning cobwebs.

Agreed. Naturally, he's pro Pola and her child within.

And don't forget Edna, who was on the rebound when Chaplin met her. Or
(shudder) Joan Barry. Of for that matter May Reeves, who never claims
to be virginal and who was almost certainly older than she claims.
Those youngest ones were just part of a spectrum--the part that got the
most nasty publicity.
To my amusement, Schickel claims that "thousands of women" passed
through Chaplin's bedroom. No doubt he had a meter on Chaplin's
bed.
Hundreds, maybe, but given those long term interludes I wouldn't
bet on even one thousand.
