Try looking for the cinema audio society.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sound-article-list/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sound_design/

The two forums are affiliated. Sound Article List focuses on the
artistic aspects, Sound Design focuses on the technological aspects.

BTW, Randy Thom is a members of both groups.

Peace,

Bob

The most useful to me are:

http://duc.digidesign.com/

and

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/post-production-forum/

There are very knowledgeable people (often the same people) on both.
The DUC is of course ProTools centric, but many other issues are
discussed as well and the room-cal stickies at the top of the "post
and surround" forum
are a great community resource. The Gearslutz post forum is newer,
but very busy with a very international cast of posters doing wider
variety of work than the DUC folks. Georgia Hilton and several
others contributed to a group of stickies at the top of that forum
that are a virtual on-line education
in post production audio. See you there.

Thanks Philip-

For being in the production side as long as I have, I am still woefully
ignorant (and we all know that "ignorance is bliss.") about the comings and
goings in Post. Even a little embarrassed to be frank. I seem to be able
to hold a discussion with both my Post Super and my Post Mixer but I haven't
sat in on a mix since mag-film was the preferred media.

I am going to try and get down to LA to sit in for a day or two; my Post
Mixer is a cool guy (for sitting in his leather chair in an air-conditioned
room all day, I mean<g>) and I would probably help my own cause with a few
answers to those tricky questions like how much camera noise is "too much
camera noise" and "how do you get rid of the constant jets across the cuts?"
And the always popular "why do the grips have to start wrapping stands while
we are shooting the last, and most emotional scene of the day? And why
doesn't the clanking and crashing elicit a sharp retort from the actors or
the director whose movie it is RUINING!! Oh wait, I am ranting again. I'll
stop.

Anyway, thanks for the pointers to those forums. I'll spend a little time
there, and perhaps, ask a question or two myself. Education is a wonderful
thing!

D.
