I have had an odd occurance recently. Shipped off my Deva II-generated
DVDs for sync-up and for some reason, the Fostex DV-40 they used only
gave them one channel (ch 1). On this shoot, ch 1 was usually the
boom. It got edit started, but now I'm re-burning DVDs to try to keep
edit on schedule. Their tech man tells me that if I send the DVDs in
polyphonic .BWF rather than monophonic, that this should take care of
it. Should that make a difference? Has anyone else had this issue
with this gear? Any replies appreciated........

Thanks for the quick replies. This is an example of communication
breakdown. I asked in the beginning of the shoot for info regarding
sync-up and audio post, but got none. So I made an educated guess
going on what I have been asked for in the past. I guess that's what
you get when you assume....

Yes, Steve

The DV 40 wants to see polyhonic files and wil read them fully, I think
4 tracks max?

He is right. If you record in BWF Mono, Tracks 2-10 have duplicate time
code to Track 1 and will be skipped over in List Play mode on the DV-40.
You must record in BWF-Poly Mode if you want to send your tracks to Telecine
and have more than the first track be playable in the DV-40. This is widely
known and has been discussed here in the past.

The original DV-40's could only do 4 tracks max. Fostex later issued a
modification that would output up to 6 tracks.

Then there's the DV-824, which will do 8 tracks. For dailies, though, I
would say 2 tracks is usually the limit (except for multi-camera sitcoms,
which are almost always 4 track). Sound editors would eventually need all of
the iso tracks, of course.

This is the issue. The Dv40 only accepts Poly files. This is your
problem (mono files).
