Post subject: "Queen of the Sea," 1918 - who's seen it, and are there other silent "Little Mermaids"?
Archived from groups: alt>movies>silent (more info?)

I posted this yesterday, but it didn't go through, even though another
post of mine (in rec.arts.movies.past-films) did!

I heard of this movie recently and found the description at
allmovie.com. (It's very different from any other film version, I'm
sure.) It stars Australian Annette Kellerman.

Who has seen it?

BTW, there are at least two pretty GOOD talking cartoon versions with
the original ending - both from the mid-1970s. The longer one is from
Japan (the English translation was directed by Tim Reid) and the
shorter (half-hour) Reader's Digest cartoon has songs but no dialogue
and was narrated by Richard Chamberlain. (The oh-so-meticulous IMDb
does not have the correct cover image for that one.) The latter is
arguably the better one, but the former is a no-fail tearjerker.

Lenona.

This doesn't really answer your question, but there are mermaids in a
couple of silent films. George Melies has a short film where a
magician reveals a mermaid in a fish tank, and of course there's a
bevy of them in Peter Pan. It seems to me that there's another very
early "trick film," possibly French, which does some double-exposure
effects to put some mermaids over scenes of surf -- but I can't
remember where I saw it.

I seem to remember an underwater scene in "Mare Nostrum." The entire
story centers on the sea goddess manifesting as a woman.

A pretty good movie too.
