Hi all,

I am no expert on the LOTR books but I like the films and thought ROTK was
just awesome. But one thing that bugs me is the true extent and nature of
Gandlaf's powers. Can someone summarize what precisely he can and can't do,
and why he appears to have some powers in some scenes and none in others?

nobody really knows

gandalf the grey was under restrictions
not to be a military leader
but to limit himself mostly as an adviser and cheerleader

he had some skill with fire
but perhaps not beyond what a modern pyrotechnic expert could do

gandalf the white was on a mission from god (literaly)
so we dont know how far he was allowed to go
or with what special powers he had

he appeared ready to defend the gate single handed
perhaps with the expectation he could

A complicated question.

In his native state he was a Maia, that is, effectively a demi-God,
same
as Sauron and Saruman. He would have had minor God-like powers.

But when he went to Middle Earth as an embodied man, he was supposed
to
be able to suffer mortal ills, though he would never die. And he was
forbidden to show his full powers. In a pinch he occasionally did
use
some, however, especially when confronting the Balrog. After he
returned from that bit, apparently he was less constrained.

He has the ability to manipulate all metals with just the power of his
mind. And a hunch back (don't forget the hunch back).

Hunchback you say? I must admit that I did forget the hunchback.
Please be so kind to refresh that which passes for my memory these days.

Thanks in advance,

Are you a non-reader because of some physical/mental handicap or are you
just too lazy to read the book? Of course, it certainly sounds like you've
read a lot of comic books (probably too many, in fact), so I have to assume
it's the latter.

He's an angel.

No, I'm not joking. He is an Ainu, an angelic order of beings. Technically
he is of lesser power than the Powers (the Valar), and is a Maia. Other
Maiar in Middle Earth are Saruman, the Balrog and Sauron.

Ah, well. Haven't seen Richard the III, though I recognized the Magneto
reference.

In specific, it's two other starring roles of Ian McKellen.

He's a Wizard in a Fantasy Novel, so if it's not clear blame the bad
writing. For more background on LOTR: read The Silmarillion.
