Over the years I'e seen the movie "The Rose" with Bette Middler a
number of times and there has always been a bit of dialog I've never
been able to catch. Last night I caught it on HBO and turned on the
closed captioning. The phrase is "rat jobbers rule."

Now I'm still in the dark. What the heck is a rat jobber?

closed captioning isn't always accurate. i don't know the context, but
maybe it was a reference to
"rack jobbers"...those wholesalers who come in and stock oddball items for
retailers.

I'm pretty sure that the "rules" part is accurate, because at one
point someone says to Bette Midler "Rat jobbers rule" and her reply is
"They don't rule me."

Also, the movie is about rock and roll and the entertainment industry.
There's no context for a "rack jobber"

Actually, there could be. Rack Jobbers stock the cassettes and CD's
you see at highway truck stops.

Doesn't seem likely, but it still makes more since than "Rat-Jobbers"

Ah. There might be something there. The core of the plot is that Bette
is a rock star who wants to take a year off and her manager won't
agree. At one point he says something like: "If you stop now you'll be
in the remainder bins in a year."
