Post subject: Ratatouille - a few quick thoughts

Disney/Pixar/Brad Bird's latest film got a sneak preview Saturday
night.

I think it's Pixar's best film since Toy Story. I've been cautiously
optimistic about Brad Bird as The Next Big Thing, even though I
enjoyed his last two films. This one has fewer sour notes and off-
tastes than his previous films, and the discipline makes for a
stronger film, I think.

It takes its furry-human dynamic VERY seriously. This should go down
alongside Secret of Nimh as one of the best furry films ever. (Juan
Lara, you've been warned :-) )

Forget the live-action/animation distinction: Brad Bird could be one
of the most visually exciting directors around. His Rube Goldberg
"scurrying" scenes and vertiginous action scenes are first rate. Most
every action scene whirls confidently and credibly around interior
spaces, and visual invention even includes some of the jazzy "tasting"
scenes. Yet the camera wizardry is rarely (if ever) gimmicky; he's
emphasizing character and location. De Palma, Spielberg, and Fincher
should be on notice, if they aren't already. He's one film away from
a masterpiece.

While Paprika is showing a talented but consistently stuffy-headed
Satoshi Kon work his mojo in art-house obscurity, millions of
animation consumers should hop on the Brad Bird bandwagon after this
film. After this and The Incredibles, even Pixar's gonna have to
start deflecting some of the praise to this guy.

More later, most likely in fpsmagazine.com.

Great to hear! I love that it's about a rat.

I'll make a confession here--I've had this harboring resentment against
Bird because of....you know:
Not *just* being associated with "Family Dog", which could be an
understandable mistake anyone could make, but ...actually DIRECTING
episodes of the Simpsons. >_<
For me, the taint was always there--Even for everything else "Iron
Giant" had going for it at the time, I just came away looking for
whatever bits of Matt Groening had corrupted the humor rhythm, and
didn't crack a smile when the beatnik guy let a squirrel out of his pants.

I'll have to admit, "Incredibles" came pretty darn close for me to make
amnesty, and I'm trying to be more forgiving of past grudges, now that
he's grown up enough to work for the "Story trust" at Emeryville.
Bird's looking better and better (even though he was taking over
somebody else's film on this one), and he's had an unbroken string so
far, I might just forgive him on this film or the next. :)

Who dares to warn me? :-)

Heh, I had no doubt about Brad Bird. I'll have to see Bird make a
seriously flawed movie before I feel dubious about him. Regrettably, John
Lassiter produced a weak middle in "Cars", and Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving
Castle" needed better ploting. I haven't seen anything all that bad from
Bird, yet, though.

At the very least this should prove something I've believed since "The
Secret of NIMH", that among furry cartoons, rats rule. :-)

Was was associated with "Family Dog" when it was a one-off episode of
Amazing Stories, and quite an entertaining one-off at that. I really can't
speak for the quality of the later series based of that ep, since I never
really saw it, but then neither can Bird, since he wasn't associated with
the series.

He directed episodes of The Simpsons back when the Simpsons was GOOD. It's
not his fault whatever direction the series took after he left. Unless, of
course, you're suggesting that The Simpsons was *never* good.

This paragraph just seems incredibly bizarre. The "squirrel in the pants"
bit seems far more influenced by Looney Tunes than anything by Groening.
It sounds like you didn't like Iron Giant because you were too busy making
tenuous connections to people you dislike than any actual faults with the
film itself.

Well, true, I don't hold that against Conan O'Brien either--
(I'm one who looks at the "Monorail" episode like the Beatles' rooftop
concert...)

TV.com has Bird directing the "Krusty framed" and "Clown Singer"
episodes among others, which fall within the acceptable Old Funny Days
margin of error-- :)
Although he's listed as "Executive consultant" on the first post-'92
slips into self-aware pretentiousness, so nobody's completely innocent.

I resent him because he's living my dream. :P My parents are haters of
art, comics, and animation. I was never allowed to pursue those interests
as a child. Bird got to study directly under the Old Men of Disney before
they passed away.

Then again, I enjoy the work I do now and it generally allows me to have
enough time in the evenings to do my own animation, so maybe I've no
real right to complain. I do envy that he got the opportunity to learn
from them directly though. That must have been something.
