Recently, a hefty and thoroughly well-researched book was published
about communist infiltration of the film community from the 1930s to
the 1950s, naming names and discussing the web of Party members,
dupes, sympathizers, front groups and all the rest of it.
It's RED STAR OVER HOLLYWOOD, by Ronald and Allis Radosh, and it
can still be found at your local bookstore. Or try Amazon, whose
customer reviewers rated it highly, and evidently found it to have a
politically conservative approach.
I found a copy, and flipped to the index for Chaplin's name, so I
could read up on the extent of his involvement, whatever that may have
been. And what do you know... his name isn't even there.
Draw your own conclusions.

Not even dupe OR sympathizer? Very interesting. It's probable that by
"conservative" those customer reviewers really meant 'defeatists' like

Wow, you were right! George S just proved it, using the same logic

As yet, there is no solid evidence that
Chaplin was a CP member, but the Party
was careful not to identify certain
public figures who used to their fame
to peddle the Party line.
Such was the case with Lillian Hellman.
In a biography by Joan Mellen, written
with the cooperation of the Hellman
estate, Hellman's secret membership
was revealed.
A reviewer writes:
>"Hellman said she was never a member
>of the Communist Party. But she was.
>For years, she and Hammett gave
>something even more valuable than
>money to the Communist Party: they lent
>their celebrated names and prestige to
>every piece of CP skullduggery requiring
>a public whitewash."
And Chaplin whitewashed the Soviet takeover of Czechoslovakia.
>"Both supported the verdict of the 1938
>Moscow purge trial as signatories to the
>petition "Leading Artists, Educators
>Support Soviet Trial Verdict," that
>appeared in the New Masses (May 3,
>1938) which said about the Old
>Bolshevik defendants:"
Chaplin also supported the purge trials
He was remarkably consistent throughout his career in his pro-Soviet
views, as
was Hellman.

I usually don't get involved with these dog-fights between
the liberal and radical right elements found in these
confines but George....you interest me.
You obviously do not care for the subject of this Usenet group.
Everytime you post something about Chaplin your disdain for
him seeps under the door like the mold left over from Katrina.
You can't tell me that your admire his work because someone
with such strong convictions as you could never weaken and
watch anything made by a man you find so repugnant--no matter
how great his work is called art. You are above such hypocrisy.
So why do you post here? Why do you waste your time extrapolating
with commie-loving low-lifes who are not fit to hear, much less
understand
your set view of the world? You need to use your time better and
maybe find a slapstick clown to admire who would better fit your high
sets
of criteria.
I understand Snub Pollard liked to sleep wrapped in the flag.
(If you can get past that Kaiser Wilhelm mustache)
I hope this helps.

Gary, dip into the archives and you'll find the answer to your
questions.
"Why, I revered Chaplin as a youth but then found his commie
sympathies
repugnant, his approval of the Czech takeover, blah blah blah"
The guy's a troll, a dispenser of cobwebbed fictions from 50 years
ago,
with the grim repetitive nature of a mentally disturbed street person.
He's a troll, so please take the advice of the rest of us in this

Sorry to alarm you, but I consider Chaplin
one of the greatest of all film-makers.
(I also consider Sergei Eisenstein to be
of that rank, and I totally abhor his communism.)
I separate the artist as a individual from
his art.
>So why do you post here?
Because this is not a fan group, it is
about the art of fhe film, something
I care about and---to an extent--am
professionally involved in. >> Stay informed about: Red Star Over Hollywood |
