Wikkipedia says this...

"Descendants of Arnold Reuben, owner of the now defunct Reuben Restaurant on
58th Street in New York City, also claim the invention. They maintain that
Reuben created the sandwich in 1914 to serve to Annette Seelos. Supporters
of this version of the invention claim that Seelos was at that time starring
in a silent film opposite Charlie Chaplin. This is suspect as documentation
of Seelos's performance in a 1914 Chaplin film has not been found."

I'd say this story is as corny and full of holes as the beef and
cheese in the sandwich (he said in a manner much like the bread).

One the one hand I'd tend to agree that this story rings as false as Berle's
claim to be in TPR. On the other hand I have five fingers.....no.... I mean on
the other hand, could this be the name of the Unknown Heroine in so many of CC's
Keystones (i.e. the pretty patient in LG)? If anyone has any of the indices of
silent film stars (necrology, etc.), would they look up the name for us? I've
Googled her and have only found the repeating story relating to the Reuben.
She's nowhere on IMDB and All Movie.

I kept looking on IMDB and I did find a reference - she was married to an actor
named Al Kaufmann who did work for Sennett and for Pickford in the teens. Her
date of death was in October 1918, perhaps a victim of the flu epidemic. No
birth year was given.

There is also a Google reference to the bookkeeper of the Santa
Barbara and Ventura Colleges of Law. Since it's right next door, I
gave her a call. She said it's her husband's name (Seelos, not
Annette) but that there was no actress from the teens in his family
that they knew about. The only possible clue is that she said her
husband's family, and name, is of German origin.

Well, she couldn't have been served that sandwich in New York *and*
work with Chaplin in California at the same time.

Unless Reuben was supposedly working in L.A. in 1914?

So far, this story doesn't pass the smell test (and neither does
the sandwich).

What are the production dates for the films in which this unidentified
actress appears? Not that I think it's likely, but it might be
possible, if the appearances were clumped together, that there was
time for a trip back to NY, perhaps sating her desire (and that of her
sour Kraut of a husband) for a bit of deli food from Reubin's
Restaurant.

Well, her last Keystone appearance (that I'm aware of) was in "Getting
Acquainted", finsihed or shipped Nov. 22, 1914. Just before that she was in
Arbuckle's "Leading Lizzie Astray" (11/18) , and just before that in HPP
(10/31). So she could conceivably have gone to NY for the holidays in December.
IF that's even her.
