Viable in what sense? The systems still work very well, and have a
fanatically loyal user base, esp. among high-end music recordists and
editors. I don't think competing in the marketplace with proprietary
hardware is the problem at all: ProTools demands its own hardware,
MOTU uses it's own hardware, to name two of the dominant players.
Sadie's problem was marketing and an over reliance on their
institutional users like the BBC and radio networks. The other shoe
has not dropped yet about what will happen to their intellectual
property and designs.
