Hi,
I've been a happy user of 2 x Sound Devices 744t's now for several
years. Recently I bought the CL-1 remote control mainly to be able to
record and stop more easily. Every now and then after I switched it to
record I've looked up to see no red light and I'm not recording. I
naturally thought I am going senile, mad or both!! It happens so
infrequently that I assumed it must be me not rolling to record. But
when I examined the flies there is a short file 7,000 kbits only or so
at the time that I rolled to record, so I had rolled!!! but it stopped
itself. This has only ocurred using the CL-1. When I was chatting to
the agent for SD here in Australia a sound recordist listening said he
had the same intermittent fault with the remote and no longer uses it.
Has anyone had simliar experiences.
Regards

yep i've had exactly the same thing happen, CL1 + keyboard attached
and intermittently either doesn't roll from CL1 or rolls and then
stops itself. does not happen often but it def does happen. using the
rec button on the machine itself seems ok. also sometimes when i roll
using the cl1 the red light (on the cl1) takes a few seconds to come
on even though the machine is rolling and rec light is lit on the 744.
using 2.15 firmware.

Colin,
What version of software are you running? Our Beta release, Badger, has
some CL-1 code changes that should make it more robust.
Also, I'm not clear, was this for a single machine or the two ganged
together?
Thanks,
---Matt

Hi Matt,
You seem to infer you are a Sound Devices employee. I am
using version 2.15. Only one of my machines seems to fault noticeably.
I sent the suspect unit to Sound Devices via their agent. They
returned it saying they had formatted the harddrive, no other
explanation and charged me $180. >> Stay informed about: SD 744t remote control |

Colin,
No, not an employee, I'm a freelance field mixer. But I have consulted
for the development team of the 744 since before it was introduced.
Sorry for the confusion, I'll be more careful with my pronouns. :-)
If you are still having the same issue, I would definitely take it up
directly with them. This seems to be an issue peculiar to your unit or
to a very small subset of 744s out there--these are the worst kind of
troubles to track down.

Hi Colin,
180 for a hd format is not what sound devices themselves would do....
here in the U. S. they have been forthcoming for the most part and
quite willing to fix and help with any problems I've had. Even a 5
year old 442. We have had our differences, but Jon T. stepped up and
made it right. As a new company treading into new territory there
have been some growing pains with every digital recorder... not only
SD, but all of them. I would venture that their "Agent" in .Oz is
screwing you...or at least does not have common sense enough to make a
better excuse than just a re-format. 180$ buys quite a nice "new"
hard drive here... not a cl-1 user, I still press the rec button. and
thanks to a few second buffer. I usually get it right on the second
attempt:)
Good Luck,
Jeff >> Stay informed about: SD 744t remote control |
