THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE WITH JONATHAN RICHMAN

On Friday April 27, the 50th San Francisco International Film Festival
will show Victor Sjostrom's classic silent film The Phantom Carriage
with an original live score written and performed by local icon
Jonathan Richman. The film is based on a Swedish folktale in which the
last sinner to die before year's end is then forced to drive death's
carriage. Sjostrom has made roughly 30 films in his masterful career,
including He Who Gets Slapped and The Wind, and SFIFF50 will be
showing a new 35mm print of The Phantom Carriage created specially for
Janus Films' 50-year anniversary. As for Richman, who led the 70s band
Modern Lovers and serenaded Ben Stiller in There's Something About
Mary, he chose The Phantom Carriage for its timeless themes. This
event takes place at the Castro Theatre at 7 pm on April 27. Tickets
are on sale to this event now to San Francisco Film Society members
with valid memberships. Buy now at www.sffs.org.
