Anyone catch this on TCM last night?
I'm thankful to get a (sharper) print of one of my favorite Brownings.
I thought the new score was average for the young composer's
competition. Competent, occasionally tuneful. Trying to emulate Carl
Davis, which is certainly a lofty goal. Even a semi-memorable main
theme.
My only problem is that I wish the score had been a bit more playful.
I never felt the film was meant to be taken seriously. It's lurid,
certainly, but I don't think the film has the emotional gravitas this
young man's score tried to inflict upon it.
I'd like to see him take on something more serious and epic in the
furture. With the right match of material we have something to really
look forward to in the future. >> Stay informed about: THE SHOW |

Hmm. I thought the string charts were very good and overall I
liked the score.

The fact that kept intruding on my enjoyment of THE SHOW was that within ten
years, both Gilbert and Adoree would be dead, she of tuberculosis in 1933
and he of a heart attack in 1936. and still in their 30s. >> Stay informed about: THE SHOW |
