I just bought a SM transmitter and it does not sound as clean as my
UM400. I expected it to sound exactly the same, but it sounds
companded. It is in the 400 mode with the receiver in Hybrid and in the
full mode. There is a nose floor that is pumping with the audio that my
other UM 400s do not have. It sounds like the sand on the drum sound at
lower level audio signals. Has anyone else noticed this?

Speaking of SMs, anybody heard a release date for the upcoming SMD and
SMQ models? Did they come to terms with the regulations guys ?

The COS11 should be wired differently to the TA3 plug ?

We have submited a second round of paper on the SMD and SMQ. It is not
a technical holdup but a bureaucratic holdup. Rather than doing one
submission with representative units tested on a low, mid and high
block, the new guys want 11 submissions, one on each block, and each
block treated as a separate model with a different FCC id number for
each block. We pointed out that it has not been done that way for the
last 30 years but who knows what the final outcome will be.

Other than that we are very comfortable with an end of June release,
as I said at NAB, but who knows what the FCC Gods will do. I'll let
y'all know when I know.
Best Regards,

Does that late June arrival apply to the Venue Field as well?

What about after the last shipment. No Lectrosonics in Europe anymore? Or
will there be a new line that will follow the lead free regulations? Maybe
an official SM transmitter?

We have no plans to sell into Europe after Jun 06 except in those
countries where a waiver is granted. I'm not holding my breath over
the waivers. We will support previously sold product as always. If I
sound a tad disgusted....

Darrell,

Just a side note with our DPA's (4061's) used with the SM we noticed a
RF sensitivity that we determined was caused by the wiring of the mic
as well. The input wiring was correct, but touching the mic cable to
the talents skin would occasionally give us a ticking noise, sounding a
bit like a hit or dropout.

It was a very irrititating little problem mostly because it only
happened occasionally, and it was very hard to trace down. Once we
figured it out with the help of Lectro and DPA we were able to have DPA
do a mod (insert cap here) and all is well.

Doesn't sound like your problem but thought those with SM's might like
to have a heads up on it.

Be Well,

Gerry Formicola

We just sent out the first beta unit for "What's Wrong" tests. Three
more will go out Tuesday. End of June-ish still looks good. We've been
trying to get right angle antenna connectors and right angle XLR's
together so they can be put into a bag. The standard right angle
connectors are too big so we made some of our own (the blue ones at
NAB) but then Neutrik sampled some new small right angle XLR's that we
have decided to use instead. The original coaxial dipole antennas used
RG58 and were too stiff; the new ones will use RG174 and be
considerably more flexible. It ain't the big stuff; it's all the
little details.
