Just plugged in a Sony HDD/DVD Freeview machine into an analogue TV
using a fully wired scart cable. Sony is on Channel 0 - AV input, and
normal anologue TV channel on other channels. Sony is now taking
charge of TV and only shows Sony RGB output irrespective of channel
selected on TV.
I think it is something to do with scart pin 8 - "switch signal video
status". I suspect that when this is powered by the Sony, the telly
remains switched internally to Channel 0, the AV input.
Grateful for some assistance - can I just cut pin 8 wire??

Cracked it - snipped lines to pin 8 and 16. With only pin 8 line
snipped, sound changed channels but left with odd picture - 1/4
frames. With line 16 sniped as well a perfect pic from all systems.

Looking at getting a 23 inch LD to replace my 22 inch CRT and thought
that newer technology would use less power. My 22 inch CRT (1986)
uses 60W. 23 inch LCD is 95W. So much for progress!!!

As long as the TV isn't using Pin 8 for switching between 4:3 and 16:9 as
well, it shouldn't cause a problem to cut it as you'll be able to select
it manually. It's also possible that the HDD/DVD recorder has a "TV/VCR"
or similar button on the remote that disables/enables the set top box
outputting a signal on pin 8.

Unfortunately, if the HDD/DVD recorder is outputting an RGB signal, some
cheaper TVs don't cope well with a signal being present on the SCART even
if pin 8 is disabled - my parents' awful Goodmans TV being a prime
example!

Depends. Some sets also use pin 8 for setting the aspect ratio. Also some
sets can't have an RGB signal present and work on their internal tuner
properly - you get breakthrough. So if they sense an RGB signal they
switch to it.

Can't you just switch the STB to standby to revert the set to normal?

Well, yes. But a 'perfect' composite picture. Without pin 16 no RGB.
