I had an odd thing happen to me the other day. I bought my Schoeps CMC4, and
GVc on consignment, and they have been working flawlessly for over nine months.
The other day, I began to hear something resembling a 15Mph wind blowing right
on my capsule. I have also had problems before, where when the body of the mic
is touched, it makes an awful hum. Well, I found out by process of elimination
that the GVC has a bad ground. After talking to LSC, they said that to have
Schoeps repair it would cost more than a new one. So, does anyone know what I
could do with a dead GVC?
Maybe I'll try to trade it in towards a new cut1 as I don't really need the GVC
anyhow.

I'm skeptical about LSC's assessment. My experience is that Schoeps
repairs are ridiculously inexpensive. I've had a number of capsules
and preamps fixed for under $100. Check with Redding Audio.

The GVC is fairly simple to fix. I don't think there's much chance of
hurting anything by trying. Pop off the plastic screw covers and it's
easy to figure out the rest. It would also be worth inspecting the
contacts inside the circular connectors with a jewler's lens (though
LSC probably did this already). If there's dirt, try cleaning them
with newspaper dipped in alcohol. fold it two or three times until it
thick enough to have some presure against the conacts and rub for a
while.
There's no secret circuits inside; just wires and solder.

I would check with Redding Audio in CT who are the Schoeps importers now on
repair costs before chucking it in altogether. I had two Schoeps systems
checked out and repaired and the prices weren't that bad - I had a system with
a bum CUT 1 and the whole repair and refresh bill was about $260 for the whole
system - capsule to preamp. Of course, it goes back to Germany so allow 6-8
weeks.

I'd try to fix it myself. It's just wires soldered at each end of the
connector(s).

Thanks guys. Redding says their average repair on a GVC is 75$, and I have
already cleaned the ext contacts. I've got today off, so maybe I'll try to
disassemble it and look around.

To take a look on small parts i use a 50mm normal lens ( from 35mm photo
camera), the quality is excellent.
The problem is that is big and heavy, so you can't work through the lens
it's just to "see".

I use wooden toothpicks dipped in alcohol for this, they seem to work just
ducky, and go in the slot first time, every time, unlike wet newsprint might.
