Thangs have been quite rainy and humid here in central Indiana. On day
two of a recent Discovery Channel shoot I pulled out my Schoeps 641
(w/cut 1) to do some interior dialogue recording. I noticed the signal
level was quite a bit lower than usual. It still sounded decent but the
level was down.
Back at the studio a couple of days later I had time to investigate and
discovered that there was noticable condensation inside the connectors.
A little swabbing and, when I tried the mic again, it was back to
nominal signal level.
I had heard all the stories here about snap, crackle, and pop from moist
Schoeps but that's not what I encountered. In my case it was just
reduced level. I'm guessing the signal was down by about 12dB or more.
Since it's such a hot mic to begin with, I had sufficient gain to still
use the microphone but now I know something else to watch for.
A little Water Music, Please?
