Hi!
Would like to go for Surround and since my main microphone is a KMR 81i, I
was wondering if I shouldn't switch over to Schoeps as long as it still
makes sens. The nice thing about Neumann are the KM 184 for the rear
channels because they are a lot cheaper then two 64s. Since I do almost only
documentary work, there would also be the option of getting an extra KMR 82i
for the price difference. I will try them both out, but funny enough you
don't find them (Schoeps) that often arround here (Austria). We are mostly a
Sennheiser/Neumann country when it comes down to location sound. I did work
with Schoeps when I was recording classical singers once, but that's longer
time ago.
So any feedback would be cool!
Thank you,
Klaus

I have used Schoeps almost exclusively for the last 24 years. I have a KMR82i
which I like a lot, and has helped in tough situations. I have used and like the
81i and will probably add one to my kit this year.

I use omnis for my surround setup. I have 2 matched pairs of DPA4006
and 4051 that I use in a Quad setup. They are based on the same
capsules and sound more or less identical.

I´ve conmpared various 5.0, LCRS and Quad recording on a feature
mixing stage and found the quad setups most satisfying. Sometimes it´s
good to have a center but the mono-surround setup sound more narrow
than the stereo-surround setups.

I wouldn´t put too much energy and religion in wether schoeps or
neumann are better for a surround ambience rig. The most important
thing is to get the same mics for each channel to avoid different
colouration in each channel.

Another criteria is self-noise when you record quiet stuff.

I´ve a big fan of omni-mics. They have an avazing open sound and a
great width in both stereo and surround setups.

Frank.

I used an Ambient A-Ray to record B/G´s to a 744. It´s pretty
portable and needs only one single mic stant to support everything. I
speciffically avoid MS technique for this kind of recordings because
I´ve found MS always to narrow and if you lower the M-signal too mich
you get serious phase problems.

Of course I would never use this to shoot production sound on a
documentary. It´s strictly for B/G´s and all re-recording mixers that
I´ve demoed the track were pretty amazed.

Oh and by the way:

You can´t get any smaller and better than the DPA compact mic series
(4051 for example) when it comes to small high quality omnis. The
neumans are about 5-6 times the size.

I´m using ball gangs from rycote. Omnis are not very sentitive to
wind.
And extended ball-gangs for the 4051.

Speed is always a major topic, same as flexibility and with surround sound
it is a nightmare. I still want to be able to move with my gear and with
this setup I can use a 4 track recorder.

Smaller in the sense of switching between dialog-interview and ambient for
the picture.
