Screenplay. You have a scriptwriter, and someone knocks up something called
a "storyboard" sometimes, but the screenplay is a little bit of a puzzle to
me.
Does the person who writes the screenplay author the script, or is the
script
first written, then the screenplay shaped around it?
I had the impression that the screenplay was created in parallel to the
script
or even before the completion of the script. In other words, scriptwriters
using
the screenplay as a model.
Can someone, in non-industry speak, enlighten me on this process of film
creation?
Thanks,
Stone me. >> Stay informed about: Screenplay |

The script and the screenplay are exactly the same thing. So exactly, in
fact, that it never occurred to me that anyone would think they were not. A
screenwriter spends x-number of months writing his screenplay, then he turns
his script in to the producers. The producers read the screenplay, make
copies of the script, and give them to the production staff. Or you can
switch terms all through those last two sentences and it will still make
perfect sense. On the set, there's usually a preference for the word
"script" when talking about it -- "What's my next line? Anybody got a
script?" -- but that's probably only because it's a shorter word. There's
no difference in meaning.

One is for motion pictures, the other is for movies. And visa versa. >> Stay informed about: Screenplay |

Thanks. The Wiki article didn't make this clear enough for me.
Do the contracts, detailing the requirements stick to set format
or do they tend to vary from sketchy to very detailed?
I know very little about the process of film production, and I
guess that goes for most.

The contracts? Do you mean the employment contracts between the producers
and the writer? If so, then, yes, some are more detailed than others. But
all adhere to the Writers Guild boilerplate known as the Minimum Basic
Agreement. This is the basic contract, as negotiated between the Guild and
the producers' organization. Details of individual contracts are then
worked out, granting additional rights and duties, but in a Guild-sanctioned
agreement, no terms may be less favorable to the writer than those in the
Minimum Basic Agreement.
