Years ago when going through local 1920s newspapers on microfilm, I came
across the term "Silent film."

When was the term "Silent Film" first coined?

Darren
(as far back as 1919 films were labled in Saginaw, MI newspaper ads as
"classics of cinema".)

That term was a redundancy until the late 1920s, so I doubt it goes
back any farther than that. But there are references to the "silent
drama" and the "silent stage" in magazines and newspapers of the very
early 1910s.
