As some of you might know ABC News is starting to use and except the
Sony PDW 510 XD Camera. You can set this camera to record the camera
mic onto channels 3 and or 4. A permalance cameraman who works for
ABC News all the time out of NYC set his camera to do just this.
According to this cameraman the editor at ABC said that when editing
using the AVID that channel 1 and 3 were mixed together and 2 and 4
were mixed together and that he could not separate them. He also said
that it was an AVID related problem and could not figure out how to
fix this so that he could access the individual channels. Does anyone
have any ideas?

Andy

hi andy
I sent your post to another abc perma-lancer
here is his reply:

"In the menu there are audio set up options that dictate the
assignment of the various channels. The default may be the “mixed”
audio mode, but I know for sure you have options of assignments. I
believe I have mine on “stereo” thus giving me separate tracks on
channels 1 & 2 and then I assign the camera mic to 3 & 4! "

Hi Al,

Thanks for checking with your camera guy. I believe you do all of the
channel assignments on the camera not in the menu. Also the editor
said that it was an Avid problem that the tracks were recorded
properly in their on discreet channel. The editor was unable to
seperate them in the AVID.

Al,

What your camera man was referring to in the menu (I believe) is the
menu choice of tracks 3 & 4 always recording what tracks 1 & 2 are
recording or the menu choice of tracks 3 & 4 recording what is
assigned on the switches on the outside of the camera. In either case
there is never a mixing of tracks. Just redundancy.

You might check with someone who edits for CBS NEWS if you know
someone. They have been editing with Avid and XD for a couple of
years now, and if the tracks were mixed together, then what we do
would be a big nevermind. They assign the camera mic to 3&4 fulltime,
so our stuff goes on 1&2!!!

I know none of the editors or could point you their way...

Thanks Jakob,

I will see if I can talk to the ABC editor and see how things are
setup and patched.

Thanks to you too Cleve. I do know a staff sound person at CBS and at
least I can find out if the editors are using channels 3 & 4.

That simply cannot be an Avid problem. The Avid capture or imports whatever
tracks there are, it doesn't do any form of mixing upon capture or import.
None.

However, if they are capturing from an XDCAM-deck, over SDI for instance,
the deck itself may be set to mix 1/3 and 2/4, or they might have accidently
patched a 2-track monitor output that was on mix-mode.

Sounds like a setup problem, not an Avid problem.
