Does anyone have a link to a PDF of the manual? Also, am I the only
one who finds the input/channel assignment on this camera confusing?
I'm sending two channels via cable to the rear inputs but am not clear
on if they automatically go to which channels?
Thx,
A. >> Stay informed about: Speaking of the HDX900 |

"neither I nor the AC's could, despite
much trying, locate the in-camera audio menus."
You mean, on the cam itself huh? not in the manual (?)
Cause in the manual it seems to be on pages 37-38 >> Stay informed about: Speaking of the HDX900 |

Thankfully, I am able to search a PDF file or flip through a manual.
It was in the camera where I/we had the trouble!

Let me give this a try-- CH3 and CH4 are only available through the
front connector (maybe through the Unislot wireless hole as well).
You need to make a five pin to 2 XLR 3 pin adapter cable to access 3
and 4, but have no manual adjustment other than switching on the AGC
and limiter off or on.
With mic level inputs the limiter stays on regardless of the AUTO
LEVEL setting. With line level inputs the agc AND limiter can be
switched off. The manual says (and I have found) that there is no
manual adjustment for CH3 or CH4.
I don't have the camera in front of me (I am stuck in Philadelphia
thanks to US Airways), but I think you can check the levels when you
change the side switches to monitor 3 and 4 (Page 13 on the PDF--
meters should show levels of the inputs selected). It is a pretty
hobbled setup for more than 2 channels, but great news for all of you
744 owners.
I guess you could zero out a mixer to these inputs and make
adjustments on the send, but I have not tried it. Also there appears
to be a coarse adjustment on MIC/ AUDIO 2 Page for FRONT MIC LEVEL,
default may be set to -40dB. I don't see a clear mic/line toggle for
3&4 and may be accomplished through this setting. Now that everyone
is confused I will stop.
Hope that helps,
George >> Stay informed about: Speaking of the HDX900 |

You can hardly call two channels of audio that you can control a
"total solution", which would lead most advanced productions to use a
separate sound recording system. That being said the run and gun
pathology has made its way into HD with reckless abandon. I was
making the point that with no big audio advances in the HD cameras
that could benefit audio folks. Time will tell....

Many folks here and elsewhere have mentioned the front inputs which
leads me to believe they use the camera in a different way than how I
would. I would never take the trouble to try to use the arguably
unusual front stereo input as it has two perfectly good xlr mono
inputs on the back. What I have trouble with is understanding which
channels those twp inputs go to and whether or not that can be
changed.

these who will invest in miranda and spdif to balance digital could be able

you can send front to 1 nd 2 and duplicate to 3 and 4 , you can send the
front to 3 and 4 only
you can duplicate the 1 and 2 from the back to 3 and 4
the front are mic in only with adjustable sensitivity input
dont know if the mirand 120 works whith hvx 900 but if it does you can send
digital input to 3 and 4 and analog from any point on the camera to 1 and 2
..
very easy :-)

if its like the SDX, accessing the menu's in the cam requires a 10
second hold on a button somewhere - not sure which one but that should
get you started. that confused the hell out of me at first.
this whole "4 channel" audio thing on these camera's is a sham - its
so inaccessible with normal field equipment that I'm sure less than 1%
of us are actually able to take advantage of it. Surely it wouldnt be
too hard to put in some software input level controls for the front
inputs. Anyway, pretty much its only decent use for day to day work is
using the cam mic on 3&4.. at least you can put a different mic on! >> Stay informed about: Speaking of the HDX900 |

My big question is not about the ease of using channels 3 and 4 in the field
because I think the option to always have camera mic on those channels is
great. My question is about post production.... Do editors always see these
additional channels on all of their NLE's or is this like the AFM channels
on Beta SP where many editors didn't have the facilities to even access
those additional channels? If the camera is set for camera mic on 3 and 4
and the camera guy breaks free to grab some camera mic b-roll is there a
real reason for us to switch 1 and 2 to camera mic or can we be assured the
editor will find the additional channels? >> Stay informed about: Speaking of the HDX900 |
