The relatively recent release of 'Spellbound' on DVD (released along
with 'Notorious', 'Rebecca' et al) includes a commentary by a Marian
Keane. For the most part, I found it interesting .. the one thing I
completely disagree with is when she says John killed his younger
brother on purpose and not accidentally.

Keane says the image of John sliding down shows him maliciously
knocking his brother off the wall and onto the spike that kills him.
Personally, I don't see any evidence that it was a malicious act ..
that it was anything other than a childhood incident gone horribly
wrong.

I'm not sure but either Keane is trying to beef 'Spellbound' up to be
more nasty and dangerous (for the want of better words) than it is ..
or she merely allowed herself to simply go too far, her analytical
radar primed to detect the slightest morsel of significance and meaning
and one sole point got the better of her judgment.

Otherwise though, he commentary is very illuminating indeed.

Color vs B&W in H.'s films - "Rope" was Hitchcock's first color film back in 1948 when most directors were making only B&W films. The next year H. made "Under Capricorn" in color also. Then, in 1950 Hitchcock went back to making B&W films: "Stage Fr...

A decent copy of the "The 39 Steps" - I'm upset that I cannot find a decent copy of "The 39 Steps" (1935). The copy I made off of TV years ago has 20 commercials and is snowy. The two used VHS cassette tapes I purchased over a period of a year are both terrible prints--snowy, the...
