I just watched Tarkovsky's movie Stalker. Now could someone please explain
it to me?

It seemed like a poorly-paced wander through a disused rubbish tip, with
three blokes spouting mostly-nonsensical gibberish (even with the
subtitles, I mean) at each other. And it seemed to achieve precisely nil
in its 2.5hr running time.

Yet I'm obviously missing something, as gets 8.2/10 on IMDB, and is 202/250
on their all-time list (not that the latter is much of a yardstick).

Help!

I can't. Sorry. I fell asleep in the theater.

It would help you immensely to read the classic sci-fi short story it is
based on: _Roadside Picnic_, by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. There is a
new computer game based on the story and movie out also.

Depending on which source you consult, it was either Louis Armstrong or Fats
Waller who, when approached in a nightclub by a baffled woman who asked
him/them to explain jazz, replied: "Lady, if you don't know by now, don't
mess with it". Same principle applies here, I think. BTW, "Stalker" is one
of my favorite films.

Wow, I guess that just sends "Stalker" right up to the top of the coolness
meter, doesn't it?? The ultimate accolade...

I read the synopsis of this on Wikipedia last night, and have been meaning
to see if Amazon has a copy (they do, I've just ordered it). Sounds
interesting. Also sounds like Tarkovsky made a point of omitting the
interesting bits.

Yeah. That's what got me onto the film. I don't have the game, but it
sounds interesting. It also sounds like an in-name-only tie-in to the
film.

Nice anecdote.

But anyway, back to the original question...

Tarkovsky's exploration of the id is infinitely fascinating and at times equally impenetrable.
