There is NO other Hollywood Star I know of that has fallen into this
SPECIFIC category other than Steven Seagal. I don't know HOW this guy
happened to 'shoot out of the gate', coming from TOTAL obscurity, to
land a leading a leading role, with a good director, and get 3 or 4
popular movies under his belt, before he became too big for his own
belt, falling by the wayside. Jean-Claude Van Damme would almost fall
into that category too, his real-life story, acting 'skills' aside (he
can't act, of course, and was never a 'big' box office draw) on 'how' he
became famous is inspirational. Proving once again, in life, persistence
is more important than ANYTHING, even brains and talent. (unless you can
do the splits)

He was Mike Ovitz's personal trainer.

Segal lived in the Orient for some time then left for no purpose other
than to break into mainstream films. I like his style.

Yeah, I know he was an Aikido instructor in Japan for awhile. As far as
a 'personal trainer', I think John maybe meant 'Martial Arts
Instructor'. Steven was slim at one time, but never looked athletic
enough to be a 'personal trainer'. Plus, he runs like a sissy. ''Anybody
see RIT-ChEE?''

Is "famous" quite the right word? Looking over his filmography I see had
another uncredited role that year in a film I like a lot, viz. _Klute_.

The first I ever paid any attention to him was in _The Lords of Flatbush_
and then the next year in _Death Race 2000_ and _Farewell, My Lovely_.
Somehow I missed _The Italian Stallion_ (aka _The Party at Kitty and
Stud's_).

I like 'McConaughey, Bongos and all. I Think his underrated performance
playing a Grunt, Tough Guy in REIGN OF FIRE was something of a
revelation, the Man can act, when he wants to.

He had a really good publicist. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's publicist,
in fact.

Yeah, but Stallone at least had some screen time in BANANAS, and even
more screen time in LORDS OF FLATBUSH, DEATH RACE 2000 and a few others
before ROCKY. He didn't come from NOWHERE. However, Steven Seagal came
from 'NOWHERE', if you will, and landed a LEAD role in his FIRST Movie.
NO other Star in Hollywood I know of has EVER done this. Everybody else
has had to pay their dues 'on screen' with smaller roles first.

Would these count:

Quentin Tarantino?

Harrison Ford?

Russell Crowe?

Oh. I missed the start of the thread - I thought you just had to be a
"star of Hollywood"

Well, again I was wrong. I thought he'd been in Force Ten from Nav and
then Star Wars. Tsk! Ignorance, eh!

OK, OK, that's me told.

So, may I ask you the most important question of your life? The
question is: Are you saved? (etc.)

No. He's not the star of Reservoir Dogs in any conventional sense.
He's never had a leading role in a film.

Ford has a dozen credits before star wars, with a couple of notable
ones in American Graffiti and The Conversation.

How? What would be his break out? Crowe had an extensive career long
before....LA Confidential? Virtuousity? including role that certainly
made producers and directors sit up and notice, notably Proof and
Romper Stomper.

Famous and popular movies you haven't seen - I've never watched a Harry Potter movie. The last CGI movie I saw was Toy Story 1 (besides Incredibles which doesn't really count). Never seen Ice Age, Finding Nemo, Shrek, etc and don't intend to. The last Tom Hanks movie I watched was Forrest Gump...

Did famous filmmakers like Lord of the Rings? - I wonder what Scorsese, Jim Cameron, Altman, Terrence Malick, or Woody Allen thought of "Lord of the Rings." They probably saw it as a fun film with no big artistic uniqueness.
