How many major American films can you name in which a major star does
an impression of Charlie Chaplin -- with or without makeup?

I'll name just three that leap to mind:

1) Gloria Swanson does a Chaplin impression in "Sunset Boulevard."

2) Gene Kelly does "Charlot" in "An American in Paris."

3) Johnny Depp does a Chaplin-esque turn in "Benny and Joon."

Any others?

Gloria Swanson in Manhandled
Bert Wheeler in On Again, Off Again
Felix the Cat in Felix in Hollywood
Some unknown extra in a Roscoe Arbuckle-directed talkie short, Crashing
Hollywood.

And (it just occurred to me) whoever that guy was who did Chaplin in
"The Nut," because that was not Chaplin.

Although (it suddenly occurs to me) since nobody knows who the hell he
was he can hardly be said to be a "major star."

Niether is the guy in the Arbuckle short. And looking up the facts
*after* posting (as happens all too often), I find that Bert Wheeler's
Chaplin dance routine was in High Flyers (1938).

Once you get into TV variety series, no doubt you'd find dozens of
stars who did a Chaplin bit. Certainly Carol Burnett did Chaplin at
least once. And even though Martha Raye was not imitating the Little
Tramp in her Limelight sketch with Buster Keaton, her character derived
from Calvero.

If you don't restrict it to major stars in major movies you can
find quite a few more Chaplin references, either in films or
film-related. Lucille Ball of course did Chaplin bits, and photos
of her in Chaplin costume show up on Ebay, as do photos of Will
Smith, Drew Barrymore, and Robert di Niro, A relative of the hero
in _Time of the Gypsies_ does a Chaplin imitation. The mousy little
character in _You Can't Take It with You_ is shown carving a
Tramp figure. I'm sure there are more that I don't know about or
can't recall at the moment.

Mabel Normand does an impression in Mabel's Married Life (1914)

Roscoe Arbuckle impersonates Chaplin's walk using forks stuck into
dinner rolls in The Rough House (1918)

Harry McCoy plays a Chaplin impersonator on the boardwalk in FATTY AND
MABEL AT THE SAN DIEGO EXPOSITION (1915), which may be the first case
of somebody not doing an impression of Chaplin but actually playing a
fully-intended Chaplin imitator.

Well, I think Chaplin is influenced by Roscoe Arbuckle in rolls dance.
Because Arbuckle did it on 1918 and Chaplin did in 1925, in The Gold
Rush.

There's Robert Preston in "All the Way Home".
