Hey All,
What are you using for your wireless link to betacam these days? I am
debating getting a wireless link to camera as it seems the way to go
these days, but am balancing cost against quality. It also seems that
more and more camera guys are annoyed with the snake, not to mention
the way it takes my mind off of mixing every time I have to yank it
out from under the camera guy's feet.
I've used the Zaxcom, but is very expensive. Will people pay the
rental fee for this? Now there is the new Audio-Technica system, but
I don't know anything about the audio quality. I don't want to get a
system that degrades my audio after it goes through the mixer just to
save me some difficulty with cable wrangling.
Do you even use a stereo system, or are you using two mono Lectro's to
camera?
Also, how are you guys monitoring back from camera in this setup?
With cameras getting smaller (DVX-100) how do you even mount the
receiver(s) on the camera?
I'm trying to get some info together before purchasing, so any
pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks,

The Zaxcom is the only serious way to go, as of yet.
I have used the Zaxcom, Lectros, and Sennheiser G2's as sends and no
one has complained about audio quality!!! The cameras seem to
"squash" everything in to mush anyway :)
As far as mounting goes...velcro seems to be my go to solution. If I
were working iwth DV cams...a hip-pouch for the shooter and some
umbilical to the camera would be in order.

Matt,
I have had great success with the Jimmybox. Mounts to the bottom of
any toy camera, short jumper from receiver(s) and you are done. It
comes in two sizes, one for single receiver(such as Zax or the new
Lectro) or a double that will hold two Lectro receivers. The guys at
Trew had never heard of them. If you want to drop by and see the
setup, give me a call.
I prefer to have the camera op monitor, though some resist the idea of
wearing headphones connected to the camera. I am exploring bluetooth
headphones to eliminate the wire, so maybe more ops will like this
option.
As to the cost of the wireless hop, raise your day rate. I yet to
find many producers or camera owners that will pay extra for the
wireless link. They all love it, just don't want to pay for it. I
currently am using two Zax links for multiple cameras. If you shop
around you can usually find Zax systems for less than a comparable
Lectro setup cost.

Yes the jimmy box is perfect for that I have one too .. it pays to
shop around the web lots of products like these that most audio houses
don't know about. I think the Zaxcom system is the winner, for the
whole system around 6K and that with a IFB TX that can send Timecode
for Remote rigger of zaxcom recorder option and monitoring the the
sound from the camera, it's always a sell job to get the rate u need
to cover the "extras" but they soon learn how much better the shoot
goes, as for camops wearing headphones the seasoned pros will do it
with a little coaxing but I find the newbies a lot harder to crack.
It's all a learning exp for them (and us mixers) so save your $$ and
get the best stay away from the higher frequency blocks as they are
being eaten up by the digital TV revolotion. hope this helps >> Stay informed about: Stereo Wireless Link Suggestions |

At first glance, the Zaxcom looks expensive, However, this one system
does the work of:
4 wireless links (stereo audio to camera, camera return audio, time code)
transcription / double system recorder
If you do the math, it's very economical and far superior to anything else.

The current Zaxcom 2 channel solution (TRX900 with STA100 stereo
adaptor) has no issues with Wendt mixers or any other mixers for that
matter. The true balanced line level input with excellent common mode
rejection makes the difference over our now discontinued "Stereoline"
transmitter. The combination of Zaxcom and Wendt will work very well.
