On 8/16, Shout Factory DVD will be releasing a 3-dvd set called Dick
Cavett: Rock Icons, which I'm reviewing for
www.digitallyobsessed.com
It's full of great performances by Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane,
Janis Joplin and others.
But what silents fans may be most interested in is the fact that
instead of just excerpting the music, the entire program is included.
One of these, from August 1970, features Janis Joplin and Gloria
Swanson. They have an amusing colloquy about the similarities between
flappers and hippies, and then Cavett asks Swanson about Queen Kelly,
leading to an extended discussion about what happened to that film
(though she has trouble bringing herself to say "brothel".... maybe she
thought standards and practices would object) and dealing with von
Stroheim. Well worth seeing. There's probably 20 minutes devoted to
Swanson, leading to the last two guests (an amazingly young Margot
Kidder and some inarticulate football player who was writing a tell-all
book)getting pretty short shrift.
If you use Netflix, you'll want to ask for disc 2 of the set, but it's
priced cheaply ($24.95, I believe).
