Did anybody here use a TC slate from Ambient ?
After reading their doc on the net it's not clear for me if their
slates have an internal Tc generator.
If they had one, would i be able to feed it in my audio recorder and
use it solely as main sync ?

Thanks

Philippe, paris

If you're talking about the Ambient Mast slate, then yes, of course there's
a built-in TC generator which you can easily use as master TC for
everything.

I'm using the Ambient slate now for some years and am very happy with it.
The built-in TC wireless transmitter is a bit on the weak side though.

Yes, the Ambient ACD 300 series slates have an internal timecode generator
and will function as a timcode source. I regularly use mine to jam the
camera and to jam back to my DAT or other device.

You mean the built in TC wireless "receiver" don't you? I haven't had any
notable range issues with either of mine so there is the possibility that
you may be experiencing some sort of interference on your chosen frequency.
I certainly don't expect a cheap transmitter/receiver combo to get the same
range as an audio grade RF mic but I feel they do quite well for what they
are.

Yes, of course, I meant 'transmitter'. Well, there is no frequency to chose
from, unfortunately. The 'rech' of the transmitter in my experience is very
limited. In effect I got so much trouble to constantly check if the time
code is running that I gave up on record-run altogether. I once got a new
small circuit board shipped from Ambient because there was a batch of them
acting up but still.......a Comtek can do better than what's built in.

Now I'm happy to hear that you're not having this troubles. I'm the only one
I know who uses the ambient slate in LA......

Yes to oth of your questions.

The manual is very poorly written- it took me forever just to figure
how to set the RealTime clock.

Ambient has been rewiring many of their manuals; I have been told the
that slate manual is next and should contain a cheat-sheet of settings
for particular shooting set-ups.

Another brilliant thing of the ambient slates is ( don't know if other
brands have this ) that you can tune them with a Ambient masterclock,
( dealers can do it for you ) that can be tuned to let's say an Aaton
clock, or whatever other brand.

I love my ambient slate. Yes, the documentation could be better but
for the most part the basic operation is straight forward. There are a
few pitfalls but not too many. One feature i do like is the slates
ability to give me an indication when i've mistakenly cross jammed or
have jammed from a mis-matched TC source. There are many advanced
features packed into a very small package. Is it overkill? For alot
of mixers, probably. But for me i appreciate all the capability that
this slate can deliver. I kind of consider it to be like the SQN of
slates. It performs very well, but in the hands of someone totally
unfamiliar with the product it can be strange and alien.

Hi. I'm using a Denecke TS3 (just to offer a litte contrast here =:)
and also very happy.
I'm using a wireless system. In fact my TX is from BlackBoxVideo and my
receiver from Ambient. Both use the same chip and in the same
frequency. TX (Ambient and BBV) are 10mW only, but at that freq the
reach is quite good. Never had a problem.

Anyhow, if you want to insert an RF amp you can buy the BBV TX, since
it has a BNC for the antenna. The Ambient one has the antenna attached,
AFAIK.
My system is 433,92 MHz and I found a 20x RF amp on that freq as a kit
wich is fair enough for most situations. I haven't built the amp yet so
I can not report anything specific, but you can search for something
similar in that freq.
But it may be an interference problem... 433-434 MHz is quite clean
here in Spain.
