For instance, when I saw KING KONG (1933) a couple of months ago, I'm
pretty sure that Kong's original entrance (jungle drums beating, then
stop, forest opens, Kong's face emerges, he screams, then stalks
forward as orchestra begins playing) was not shown.

Is it too much to expect for a film to be shown uncut anymore on tv?

I've always thought that the TCM versions are the original Hollywood
release, unless otherwise stated.

That was TCM? Not likely. Why on earth would ANY station cut that classic
entrance?

Again unlikely. This sequence takes less than one minute, and all of the
earlier reels have been carefully building up to it. Surely some less
important scene could have been "sweated out" for time constraints.

But I remember waiting for it and in the version I saw, the 1st time
one saw K.K. was when he was approaching Fay Wray dangling from those
posts she was tied to.

The reason I remember the original scene is because I am a musicnut and
I love to hear the contrast between the jungle drums, followed by the
pause, followed by K.K. letting out a roar, and then followed by Max
Steiner's wonderfully dissonant orchestral score which gives the
impression that something is going to go horribly awry.

Believe it or not, I remember seeing exactly that on a local TV station
in the late 1970s. It aired Psycho, but cut the shower scene!

As for TCM, I strongly doubt that they intentionally cut anything from
King Kong. It would make no sense.

Nope. The film's running time is 100 minutes. TCM puts it in a 2
hour time slot.

Moreover, cutting this scene would be like airing "Psycho"
with the shower scene edited out. I think the more likely
explanation for the original poster's memory is that he
took a bathroom break during Kong's entrance scene
and forgot about it later.

In 1971, in ĖNew Corinth, Greece, I attended a showing of "Soldier Blue"
at the Lais Cinema. We saw the cavalry forming for the attack on the
Indian village, then a cut to the troopers forming up to leave the
field.

The *entire* climax/massacre had been edited out. The Greeks were just
as puzzled at the film as I was furious at the censors in the Colonels'
junta.
