MGM finally gave us a definitive BABES IN TOYLAND. I got mine today
as part of the three-title Holiday package (with BISHOP'S WIFE and
POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES). A brand new transfer of the Eastman House
nitrate. Complete from MPPAA logo to End title. They killed the room
tone on the soundtrack but otherwise it's a great disc. All others
are now superfluous (though you may want to keep one of the colorized
versions for your under-fives).

By killing the room tone, what I mean is that in the process of
reducing noise from the variable density soundtrack, they compressed
the audio so that the ambient sound was almost eliminated.

The name of the package is MGM Holiday Collection. Here's a link:

Don't worry about the package showing MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS.
The film print is BABES IN TOYLAND all the way and it retires all
previous releases.

"They killed the room tone on the soundtrack?"

I probably should know what you mean, but must confess I don't. ;)

Well, actually the Warners folks are doing much better with the WB,
MGM (pre-70's) and RKO libraries. TOYLAND is put out by MGM - which
is the MGM/UA (aka James Bond) company. Different outfit entirely.
For the most part, they don't handle vintage material (primarily the
Samuel Goldwyn library). So I guess film noise is a pretty foreign
artifact to those guys. Still, if you take a listen to the Mark 56
soundtrack LP of TOYLAND, made from a 35mm nitrate print, you'll hear
presence and dynamics that are nowhere to be found on the new DVD.

Ah! That's what I feared. These heavy-handed "noise reduction" enthusiasts
at MGM and WB are doing damage to vintage film product that is just as awful
and long-lasting were someone to think the image might look better if the
contrast levels were all smoothed to a uniform flat gray.

It's a serious and prevalent problem that truly needs to be addressed, yet
one that seldom receives mention in light of how spectacular these films
often look.

silght echo is removed when too much "no-noise" is applied to analog sound.
