hi everyone. I was curious if someone has bought one these yet or any
resellers on here have recieved theirs and tried them out? It seems
like a pretty good deal. Even if you have to by an external box like a
Denecke sb-2 and just leave it connected all day its still less money
than an FR-2. Also I noticed on the website it says "Includes Frame
Lock, Lock and Release and flexible Freewheel settings for
unpredictable timecode sources"... I wonder if you basically fed it
code and had it on "freewheel" and pulled the cable if it would work
like jamming it? if so then it would work pretty well with time of day
TC and you wouldn't really need it to "generate" out. you could just
get like an SB2 on the camera or jams the slate with the same source
and they should stay pretty much in sync. any thoughts? If Sound
Devices could do a version of the 722 with no HD (to save money in
construction) and TC in out for around the 1500-1800 range it could be
a real killer for the other companies. (just throwing it out there).
Maybe even skip the mike pre's and make it line in only since a lot of
people seem to use the mic pre's in their mixer anyway. again just a
thought.

Alex

According the manual, if the HD-P2 is in 'infinite freewheel', you can
jam and it will then generate code on its own (until power cycled.) I
don't have one, so I haven't tried it.

Have a look at the current discussion on rec.audio.pro, started by
someone Who has just received one of these reorders.

I read the thread, but there was no mention of the timecode stuff...
just a lot of chatter about the pre-record buffer issue. Although his
prelim findings on mic pre's is a good sign. Although I thing that
might be a mute point if we are running it on the output of a mixer.
hopefully in that case (when the input switch is in line in mode) we
are bypassing the built in mic pres and its just feeding straight
through to the A/D's. built in mic pre's are handy but useless in a bag
setup with a nice bag mixer.

I read the manual last night-

It does Jam Sync and in that mode continues to keep time when it does
not sense an exterior source (until you change modes or power down.

For the price and configuration (2 tracks, compact flash media only),
the only drawback I see is the file naming procedures and conventions.
You only get 8 characters to name files and it doesn't look easy to
change scene number on the fly (bring a keyboard and update file names
on breaks). But it does automatically increment up.

It doesn't look like there is any power modes other than on and off.

The TC implementation appears pretty limited, and geared to different
applications than working over the shoulder with a boom pole.

That said, it does jam sync and continue TC until powered off or the TC
mode is changed.
I've learned the hard way is worth it to take the 30 sec to re-jam
after a powerdown, anyway.
