As far as one can tell from the movies, if you find something, can prove you
found it, and report your having found it, you won it. At least, this is how
I interpret the various remarks about the matter in A1 and A2 (Parker: "If
they find something out there, does that mean we get full shares?" and in
A2, at the colony in the SE: "If he finds something, it is his.")
Now surely this means, if I have inferred the way claiming works in the
Alien universe, that the derelict and the aliens all belonmg to Ripley. She
is the sole survivor of the original encounter, and accurately reported
where more were to be found (again from A2SE: "Some honch in a cushy office
on Earth tells me to go look at a grid reference. I go look...").
An alternative, more cynical Ripley would decline to join Gorman and Burke's
rescue mission and simply say Sure, go look. When they failed to return,
which without her they would have done, either a further mission would
establish the facts, or the Sulaco would have sent back enough information
to verify her story. >> Stay informed about: Technically, doesn't Ripley own the Alien? |

Good question...
But, my take is, as Ripley was under the pay of the company, and we know the
company deliberately sent the crew there....
(Re: Ash's special order)
.... then *as* an agent of the company, it actually makes it *their*
discovery!

Newt's parents, the colony supervisor, and Burke certainly don't think so.
The first and last reckon they've hit paydirt finding the derelict and the
Alien.
I think Ripley believes that nobody will be allowed to survive an encounter
with the aliens. It might compromise their usefulness as a weapon. Burke is
just being naive. If he made it back through quarantine with a facehugger
he'd be the first casualty. >> Stay informed about: Technically, doesn't Ripley own the Alien? |

But none of them *are the company*
(And *Alien* set the precedent, not Aliens.. which screwed it...)

They may have gotten credit for the "discovery" (which may have
meant some nice bonuses or something) but I'd have to agree with
Covenant. When you work for a company, it's pretty much their
property.
Good real world analogy (which makes me very angry!): As far as
I understand it, The Incredibles is the last movie Pixar is releasing
in "co-operation" with Disney. Pixar (Brad Bird) created The
Incredibles, but Disney will own all the rights for any sequels or
further merchandising of the characters.
When you work for somebody, you might give up a lot of personal
"rights". The Company didn't seem like they really cared about
their employees all that much. :-)
As for Burke, he was a weasel. He was definately trying to work
outside the framework of what is right or wrong, legally or morally.

Very well might have been!
Have a great day!
