Well I was not thinking of a 'famous' actress but I am sure you have
seen or perhaps better stated, heard her work.
I was thinking of Sara Berner who played the woman on the fire escape
in REAR WINDOW. She also was the voice of the telephone operator in
NORTH BY NORTHWEST.
She was an extremely interesting person who did extensive work in
old time radio and voice work in cartoons starting in the 1930s. She
often worked with Mel Blanc. She did occasional movie work too.
Blanc was the first voice actor to demand and get credit for the roles
he did. Some of the few credits given to Sara Berner in cartoons
are because of Blanc.
Her voice was used for many cartoon characters and was often
not credited with the work. There are groups on the Internet
dedicated to establishing which actors provided the voices for the
thousands of unaccredited cartoon roles. It is also interesting that
the same actor/actress might not always voice the same character.
Some of the known characters Sara Berner provided the voices for
sometimes were: Sniffles the mouse, Andy Panda, Mama Panda, Mama
Buzzard, Mrs. Daffy Duck and Chilly Willy.
On radio and she played many roles. She even had her own brief
detective series but is likely most remembered as Mabel Flapsaddle an
irascible telephone operator who gave confounded Jack Benny on the
early episodes of his radio program. Sometimes she dated Jack Benny
at the start of the series. She continued to give him a rough time
on the telephone during the entire run of the Jack Benny Radio
Program. She also appeared in a few times on his and many other TV
shows.
If you have any information about her or can point me in the right
direction to find more information I will appreciate it.
Best wishes,
- Vic
