Not trying to spout any feminist agenda or start anything unpleasant,
but going thru all those great directors I was again struck by how
lopsided that world is. Not just then, but now as well. I mean,
there's a whole list on Wikipedia, but which of them is much good?
Who is worthy of being added to this list?

Lupino
Riefenstahl
Nair
Coolidge
Hardwicke
Foster
Shelly
Ephron
Marshall
Heckerling

Is that really it? Please don't mention Jimmie Spheeris's wretched
sister or I'll puke all over my keyboard. And Wertmuller is overrated.

Susan Seidelman is better than some of the ones on your list.
And let's not forget Hong Kong's Ann Hui.

What, no Gillian Armstrong? No Mimi Leder? Or Jane Campion?

(I'm just tossing off names I've heard - I'm not qualified to rate
these directors.)

You include Nora Ephron and say that Wertmuller is overrated?

And Penelope Spheeris did direct Wayne's World.

Amy Heckerling? Jeezus. How about Susan Seidelman? Speaking of useless
hack directors...

Let's see...

Gillian Armstrong
Larissa Schepitko
Margarethe Von Trotta
Samira Makhmalbaf
Mira Nair
Pascale Ferran
Deepa Mehta
Jane Campion
Agnes Varda
Leni Reifenstahl

Just off the top of my head...

If Nora Ephron belongs on that list, then Joan Micklin Silver (director
of inter alia _Hester Street_, _Crossing Delancey_ and the TV adaptation
of "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" with Shelley Duvall that was part of the
"American Short Story" series) certainly does. This is what is known in
the business as an a fortiori argument.

Well, he did say ten, and I could only think of two good films by JMS,
Hester St and Crossing Delancey. I was looking for a director who'd
actually leave her neighbourhood.

Your inter alia includes Chilly Scenes of Winter (AKA Head Over Heels)
which, for some reason, I rather like (it probably helps that Mary Beth Hurt
is one of those perceived "brainy" 70s actresses I had a crush on, a list
which included Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Mary Steenburgen, Jessica Harper
and--be still my heart!--Jane Alexander).

At least "Sleepless in Seattle" is a guilty pleasure. Any praise of
any of Wertmuller's work is incomprehensible to me.

GAG SPEW CHUNKS RALPH

C'mon, any moron could've directed that. Oh, I'm sorry, one DID.

Heckerling will forever be special to me for "Fast Times." That's
all.

I considered Armstrong & Campion. Cusp. And I did mention Nair &
Reifenstahl, of course. Still, interesting that none of these made
the overall lists in the separate thread. Directing seems to be as
male dominant as golf.
