Post subject: Trash Cinema Fans???
Archived from groups: alt>cult-movies (more info?)

What happened to all of the fans of trash cinema? I mean 70's
explotation films, low budget scfi-/horror films from the 80's, 50's B
films, Roger Corman films etc....

I consider myself a pretty good die hard fan of trash cinema and
yet it seems that I never seem to meet any other fans in social
situations (other then conventions and whatnot) in the workplace
etc....

I am a cameraman for a local WI TV station and one of my duties is
to film "Chiller Theater with Ned The Dead" every week, and my fellow
co-workers that do this with me do it as part of their job and nothing
more then their job, rather the enjoying it (as I do). I have
already seen a good 3/4 of the movies Ned shows and yet my co-workers
have never even heard of most of these films, let alone seen them
before (and these are not all obscure oddball films, there are some
more "mainstream" ones like Plan 9 From Outer Space, Santa Clause
Conquers The Martians, Horror Hotel and some Godzilla films along with
the films time has forgotten), yet outside of Ned, I am the only one
that knows these movies before we air them.

I would love to find that a co-worker would know exactly what I was
talking about if I brought up how much the sets and the planetscape
for Galaxy Of Terror looked like the "Future War" of The Terminator,
or someone that could name another Roddy Piper SF film other then
They
Live and who knew what a Trancer was and who has even heard of Android
(the movie) and who thought of Charles Band when hearing "full moon"
and who thinks of the movie Hardware when hearing Sitgmata by Ministry
and know what a Triffid is and who loves Shatner for Kingdom Of The
Spiders just as much as for Capt. Jim Kirk and ....

Have we, the fans of trash cinema, dwindled in numbers so much that
we are in danger of being eaten by the mainstream people that have
never seen a horror or SF movie that was made before 1990?

I am not saying that mainstream equals bad, I am just lamenting that
since mainstream is by definition MAINSTREAM (that most people would
know), it would be nice to meet other fans of non-mainstream films
once in a while.

Oh, we're out here, all right. This newsgroup is unfortunately on life
support.

Sadly, this ain't 1970 no more. Nobody actually comes out and says it, but
individuality, love of art for art's sake, and gratuitous wildness is "out"
and mindless conformism is "in".

*raises hand* Me me me me me! :-)

More seriously, if you'd like to meet some folks who are into non-normal
cinema, it might be a good idea to start raising the flag and see if any
friends see it. If you start some threads about tasty films, I'll read them
and post a reply when appropriate... and hopefully some other folks'll join
us.
Hell, I've always thought Usenet was better than the blogosphere. Perhaps
other people will get tired of all the webbydrama and bring this newsgroup
back from the dead.

"The die was cast. It was a proud day for the Milligan family as I was taken
from the house. 'I'm too young to go,' I screamed as Military Policemen
dragged me from my pram, clutching a dummy. At Victoria Station the R.T.O.
gave me a travel warrant, a white feather and a picture of Hitler marked,
'This is your enemy.' I searched every compartment, but he wasn't on the
train. At 4.30. June 2nd, 1940, on a summer's day all mare's tails and blue
sky we arrived at Bexhill-on-Sea, where I got off. It wasn't easy. The train
didn't stop there." -- Spike Milligan, _Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall_
