Hi all,

Is there a standard frequency that is used for the tone in a two-pop?
Also, (after searching the archives) I want to make sure: Is the
two-pop duration is one frame starting at the '2' in the countdown?

Thanks in advance!

Phil

Hi Phil,
The SMPTE film leader two pip is covered by a two or three page SMPTE
document on its standard and specifications, try them.
And yes it is a single frame of audio matched exactly to the appearance
of the two picture frame.
Cheers, Malcolm

I would say 1kHz. Some might say 800Hz (less agressive sound).

400 is sometimes used on tv test patterns, but I've never heard it as a
pop, and not a tuning 440 (or a more aggressive modern 444 "A").

1k is most often used.

Another approach is to pop at 1k for the 8-through-3 frames, and then 2k
(an octave higher) to make the 2 frame 'final'. I've heard that on a lot
of TV mixes.

I put 3 different frequencies on each stem in a feature mix so I can
hear at the 2-pop if all three stems are running and they don´t add up
so much in level when summed.

I use 1k on dialogue, 900 on fx and 1100 on music. Wich makes a nice
chord on the master.

frank.
