I think it's time to wreck the Wikipedia entry on Chaplin by starting
all sorts of fights on it about Chaplin's politics, 'cause that's
likely where most people are going to be going online to get Chaplin
info.
Or items like the following could be cleaned up (this one doesn't sound
likely to me for many reasons):
In his later years Chaplin was a fan of Benny Hill (a big Chaplin fan
himself), a compliment that touched Benny deeply when he visited
Chaplin's home on invitation from Chaplin's family in 1991 and
discovered that Charlie had a vast collection of Benny Hill videos >> Stay informed about: Chaplin's Wikipedia entry |

I wonder if the 80+ year-old Chaplin was a VHS or Betamax kind of guy?
Or was he stringing up old reel-to-reel tapes on an Ampex machine when
he was recording all these Benny Hill episodes, which must have been a
pretty big hit in Switzerland.

The Betamax video recorder came out around 1976; Chaplin died in
1977. How likely is it that CC had a videocasette recorder and a
collection of tapes?

It's in Robinson's book, I believe. The original ROCKY: the only good
film Sylvester Stallone ever made.

I've heard this story as well, from another source. It doesn't seem unlikely
at all that as a fellow comedian he might have had a collection of Hill's
work on tape.
This brings up a question I've been wondering about myself lately-who/what
were some of Chaplin's favorite entertainers/films in his later years?
Surely he must have kept involved in what was going on in the film world.
Did he ever give any opinions on then-current cinema? I wonder if he saw any
of the new American films from Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg, etc.? I forget
where I heard this, but supposedly one film that Chaplin admired very much
was the original ROCKY (1976).

I beleive the older reel to reel recorders were commercially available
in the early seventies, so it is technically possible that somehow he
got a collection of Benny Hill videos, but he would have had to have
somebody there to maintain the collection. I can't imagine a guy his
age or in his condition would have had the ability to run the thing
himself.

The fact that Benny Hill was recorded on videotape wouldn't really
offer a clue as to whether CC had copies of his shows. And it's
unlikely that the Hill shows were commercially available on tape as
early as 1977, although someone could have taped them off TV for
Chaplin.
Somehow I can't see Chaplin with a reel to reel video recorder

I remember Chaplin raving about Peter Sellers and DR. STRANGELOVE in
a mid-1960's interview--although this is just on a 40-year old memory
on my part. I've never been able to locate the article again. >> Stay informed about: Chaplin's Wikipedia entry |

Where's Jim N.? I believe he's said that Chapiin admired Jerry Lewis
and that they
exchanged prints of one of their films.
Chaplin was typically generous in praising other comedians, though
there were some
that he never commented on. He seems to have recognized talent when he
saw it,
which is obvious in the casting of his own films. It's not improbable
to me that he saw
something interesting in the work of Benny Hill.

he did.

I don't think Chaplin having video tapes of Benny Hill is unlikely
because of Benny Hill himself. I was thinking more along the lines of
Chaplin's physical decline and the timing of video becoming
commercially popular.
I was thinking more along the lines of any sentance starting "Chaplin
had a vast collection of <performer X> videos" as unlikely.

I know he had very high praise for both Lou Costello and Mexican comedian
Cantinflas. He also admired and even envied Groucho's skill as a verbal
comedian (which, according to Groucho, always baffled him as to how Chaplin
could possibly envy another comedian, since Groucho stated on many occasions
that Chaplin was the greatest).
