G'day all,
I have long considered a Stereo Zaxcom setup for a wireless link to
camera, but have always been concerned about getting a return that was
reliable ( I always monitor off camera )
My questions are:-
Is the Zaxcom sound quality good enough for a
Magazine/Reality/Documentary setup?
My typical day is recording presenting/interviews done with 2 or 3
radio mics, through my mixer, via snake to the Digibeta. Would adding
another radio transmitting signal path (the camera link) compromise the
sound too much?
Are there any alternatives, without looking at twin transmitters (ie.
two lectro setups)?
Has anybody tried any of the small FM wireless transmitters (such as
the belkin for iPod)to use as a headphone return? Are they reliable
enough to make you feel secure in calling a re-take due to radio
interference ? Battery life or can they be split off the camera power?
Any thoughts or suggestion would be cool.

If you are sending a wireless feed to your camera (which is standard in
most run+gun shows) and not doing a backup. Your camera operator must
monitor for interference. This is standard for all reality,
documentary, portable type shows. As well as they are able to follow
the storyline. Having another wireless for monitoring your mix isnt the
best since you wont know where the break is. Trust your Camera OP and
you should be fine.

I'm just curious when the last time anyone had a radio hit on the wireless
link? If you are gonna carry another device for peace of mind why not get a
little two channel recorder like the new m-audio device which is coming out
soon and just record a backup? >> Stay informed about: Wireless Link to Camera - Optimum Setup |

Comtek??? You could even add a 1/2 wave dipole antenna (yes to your bag
system!) to aid in reception.

I wanted to add that the Iriver 999 I am using now will record stereo
line in, with TC on one track and audio on the other for TC
transcription. I got this from a news correspondent that was FTPing
mp3s with TC to the far east and getting transcripts e mailed back
before the footage was uplinked to the network. The audio quality be
it two track or mono is "broadcast quality", and I have complete
confidence that the tracks could be used if there was a takebuster hit
on tape. I have never had to resort to providing backups for
replacment use. but oh! that "peace of mind"... >> Stay informed about: Wireless Link to Camera - Optimum Setup |

James,
Greg Northam has been using that same setup, (Zaxcom stereo link and small
Ipod type transmitter for return), for a couple of months now.

All the customers I know of say the sound quality of the Zaxcom stereo
transmitter is better than any other competing wireless system - even
though the stereo transmitter is not quite as good as our Mono version.
If you want to record a backup copy for piece of mind, the new TRX990
stereo transmitter (to be released around the end of the year) will
have an optional flash recorder built into it (with timecode).
