Hey All,

I know i saw it a while back, but couldnt find it in the archives:

Does anyone know the color coding on the wiring that comes in the
coiled cable in the MDR-7506 Headphones?

My best Guess is Gold-Tip, Red-Right, Green-Sleeve, but does anyone
have a decisive answer, before i waste a couple connectors on trial-
and-error.

thanks in advance,
e.

Gold is the shield, and I believe that red is, in fact, Left which is tip.
Go to Radio Shack and buy a small set of clip-leads, tin the wires (you'll
have to do that anyway) and clip-up your connection. It will save you the
test soldering and you can consider them you first piece of bench test
equipment.

Easier than that, touch the ground lead to one terminal of a 1.5v.
battery and touch one of the live leads to the other terminal and
listen to which earphone clicks.

Sony MDR headphone wiring scheme:

Green = Tip (left)
Red = Ring (right)
Gold = Sleeve (ground)

Glen,

Does Trew or Remote Audio sell the 7506's modified with a straight
cable, so the work better with IFB's? The coiled cable doesn't work
very well as an antennae, replacing with a straight cable increases
the range dramatically.

Thanks...and happy new year.

Hi Phil,

Yes, Trew Audio has three cable modifications for the MDR-7506
headphones, as described below. Mods #1 and #2 are highly recommended
because the current cable used by Sony sucks so badly (I'm afraid
that's the most truthful way to describe it). Amazing they switched to
it in the first place, and even more amazing they continue to use it.
Mod #3 is specifically for wireless monitoring.

1) Coiled cable
This cable is much more durable than the standard Sony headphone cable
and contains a shielded pair for use with a headset mic if needed.
Normally terminated to a Neutrik 1/4" plug; 1/8 plug availabe. (Not
yet available with the Sony-type 1/8" inside a 1/4" plug.) This is the
setup I use on my cart. Collapsed length: 2 feet. Extended length: 7
feet.

2) Straight cable
This cable is straight with a smooth gloss finish and has a shielded
pair for use with a headset mic. Normally terminated to a Neutrik 1/4"
plug; 1/8" plug available. (Not yet available with the Sony-type 1/8"
screwed inside a 1/4" plug.) Length: 6 feet.

The above mods can also be had with a miniature dynamic headset
microphone.

3) Molded right-angle cable. This thin straight cable contains just
three conductors (L, R, Grnd) and terminates to a molded-on right-
angle 1/8" stereo plug. I think this is the best arrangement for
wireless monitoring such as with Lectro IFB or Comtek use. However,
when standard stereo headphone wiring is used with a Comtek PR-216
receiver, the mono signal to the left and right ears will be out of
phase with each other. This does not bother most people at all (i.e.
those in video village), but most sound pros would be annoyed by it
(i.e. boom operators). So, if intended for a boom operator using a
Comtek PR-216 receiver, be sure to let us know so we can wire it and
label it specifically for that purpose. Standard length: 1 meter.

New MDR-7506 phones can be ordered from us with either of these cables
installed, or we can modifiy your existing headphones. I don't know
what the prices are except that they will be reasonable (and I assure
you, Oleg, that the value will be high! ;). These items are not yet
listed on our online store, so for pricing, those interested can
contact our sales departments (sales@trewaudio.com or
sales DeleteThis @trewaudio.ca in Canada, or at the phone numbers available here:
www.trewaudio.com).

I just replace the coiled cable with one from a, let's say, MDR-v100. I
make them about two feet long. Works greatr!
