Hi RAMPS!
I've been slowly buying gear to put together a nice little audio bag,
and now I'm at the point where I need to choose the bag itself. I've
got it narrowed down to two bags, but if you people think there is an
even better choice, I'd love to hear about it.
The bag is going to contain a Sound Devices 302, two Lectrosonics
wireless kits, an NP-1 battery and a power distribution system, and
perhaps a few extra small pieces of gear.
The two bags I've narrowed it down to are:
1) The Sound Devices CS-3 Production Case made by CamRade
2) The Porta-Brace MXC-302 Audio Mixer Case
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Sam >> Stay informed about: Which audio bag is the better choice? |

You should look at the Petrol bag for the 302. Pretty cool bag.

Did you use other bags before you used the Petrol? What do you like
about it?
I know in the grand scheme of things, talking about a bag isn't
exactly exciting. Many people who read this messageboard daily must
strap these thigns to their body on a regular basis. I'd really like
to hear what you have to say about them.
Admitedly, the thing I like about the CamRade bag is that it's black
as opposed to the token "production blue" of the Porta-Brace. I cannot
find a picture of the CamRade CS-3 that shows the strap that comes
with it. Anyone know if the strap is any good?
Thanks. >> Stay informed about: Which audio bag is the better choice? |

Sam,
I use a CS-3 bag with a 302 and 2 Lectro 411's and an NP-1/Battery Bud
and I like it a lot. Haven't tried the PB MXC-302, haven't tried the
Petrol. The CS-3 strap is fine imo; just like the PB but black/black
instead of buff/blue, with pad seam on one edge rather than down the
middle.

I also use a petrol bag. I have one for my 442 and one for my 302. I
was able to get one of the first ones that came through Sachtler the
US distributor. Petrols are extremely durable and well designed.
Previously to the Petrol I had the Portabrace bag for the 302. The
302 just didn't fit well int the Portabrace and where I had to put the
NP1 was akward. Portabrace might have changed the designed since that
was over 4 years ago. I talked with Portabrace back then about their
302 bag and they were very willing to make any design adjustments that
would approve that bag. I never really pursued that with them.
Portabrace also will make any of their bags in black as a special
order.

I have used the Portabrace and the Petrol.
The Portabrace was a mess, I never liked it. The mixer didn't fit
properly (HP jack was blocked!) and I couldn't set it down without it
flopping over. I think they made some adjustments to the design, so
check it out thouroughly before you buy.
Petrol is what I currently use. It isn't perfect. I like the
sturdiness, moveable dividers, Tx/Rx pouches, accessible panels, lots
of room for "stuff". My only 3 problems are the weight, not enough
room for an NP-1 (others claim their is, I couldn't make it fit...)
and I have to ziptie the mixer to the bag so it doesn't fall out when
I run (rare, but it happens)
I decided to make a 7.2V battery system to power my bag (302, 3
Lectro's) because of teh NP-1 situation.
Email me directly for pictures!

I have the Camarade CS-3 and the Petrol. One I got the Petrol I
never looked back. The Camarade just is to flimsy for me. The Petrol
holds and protects the mixer better. Both are designed to put the NP1
underneath the mixer, which is not my favorite, but it keeps the
package compact. Both will allow the NP1 to fall out the side, but
with the petrol I have found that if you put a small piece of velcro
on the battery cup that will hold in place just fine. Petrol is the
best one yet ! >> Stay informed about: Which audio bag is the better choice? |

In my Petrol 302 bag the NP1 lives on edge under the divider that
holds the 302 which is accessable from the rear zipper compartment.
It's a perfect fit. I have attached two of the Petrol receiver
pouches together and mounted them on one side for my 411s and then use
a third pouch to hold my Zaxcom TX which is attached to the other
side. Unlike Jason I've never had my 302 threaten to fall out of my
bag. I can also send you pictures if you email me.

well using a larger PEGZ1 and FP33, I found the best way to keep the
mixer put was to remove the straps, and simply run a peice of hook
velcro cross the mixer horizontally. stays put with out issue. I also
did this with my lectro recievers so they didn't slide down into the
bag. the petrols are super configurable which is great when you
change gear, or how you have it setup.
also don't forget the body harness. wouldn't work without it. >> Stay informed about: Which audio bag is the better choice? |

I use a Kata Koala-4 for my SD-302 & 2x Lectros 211's. NP1 battery
lives on a Petrol Pouch attached to the bag's belt. And a PEGZ2 for my
Lectro VRField, X5 mixer & SD702T...

I use a Kata Koala 4 for my 302 and Petrol PEGZ 3 for my Cooper. Both
have good and bad points. If I had to choose again I probably would go
the same way. >> Stay informed about: Which audio bag is the better choice? |
