Very sad news. I've known of John McCabe since I was in high school,
which is when his Laurel & Hardy bio was first published. It's one of
the best film biographies ever written. There was a time--mid
1960s--when it was OOP and fetched as much as $100 as a used book.

Besides writing a VERY under-rated book on Chaplin, wasn't John McCabe
married to Rosina Lawrence - the second schoolteacher (following June
Marlowe as Miss Crabtree) in the 1930s Our Gang comedies?

Yes, that is true. They met as part of
a "Sons of the Desert" convention.

It's the equivalent of a Chaplin buff marrying Claire Bloom.
(Although, in terms of acting ability, well...)

I wrote to McCabe once asking him a question that he was good enough
to answer. His is probably the most readable bio of Chaplin even now,
though it is not nearly as complete as Robinson's.
