The JVC 40000 model.
Also a 30000 model.

It can grab HDTV directly off the antenna or cable box. Each tape
holds 50 gigabytes of either HD or SD video (4 hours and 8 hours
respectively). Or you can compress the video even further and get 40
hours on a single tape.

And of course it's backwards-compatible with my library of VHS tapes,
so no need to throw-away several thousand dollars worth of movies/
videos/family recordings. I have some 100 blanks laying around, so my
effective storage with the new HD vcr is 5000 gig.

Sweet.

No Tivo or DVR has the ability to store 5000 gig.

No you didn't, but don't let that stop you from lying. Sorry VHS has
been utterly destroyed, despite your hysterical temper tantrums :)

Why did you have 100 High-Definition quality VHS tapes laying around?

....or are you expecting HD quality recordings on regular old VHS tapes?

D-VHS does have the advantage of backwards compatibility. And if your
blank tapes are of high enough quality, you may be able to
successfully record digital video on them. But that's where the upside
ends, and the advantages of a DVR become obvious.

A D-VHS deck is no more programmable than any other VCR. It can't
record more than 6 hours at a time (in analog) or 2 hours (in
digital). It used the fragile and bulky medium of VHS tape. It's
limited to 720p. There's no way to synchronize it with any program
guide service. It lacks random access and requires capture hardware or
another DVCR to copy material. Every time you play a tape you wear it
out a little more. Etrc. Etc.

As far as the total potential storage goes, any device that can write
to removable hard drives or DVDs also has infinite potential storage.
What counts is (a) internal storage (2 hours on a D-VHS tape vs
potentially hundreds of hours on a DVR) and how much you can record
before you have to manually tend to the machine (same answer).

How long can your D-VHS deck record before it needs intervention? How
long can a DVR record before it needs intervention? Do you understand
that you can only record 2 hours of HD on a standard VHS tape, and
even then only on the highest quality blanks (S-VHS or better), and
even then only after you modify your DVCR and void its warranty?

What will you do when you're away from home for longer than 2 hours
and there's more that that you want to record? Or do you never leave
your house?

Is it? That would explain why there's only a 2:1 difference between
it's "HD" and SD.

Wasn't D-theater 1080i? I bet Troy has "Alien VS Predator" in his
collection.

You really *are* that stupid, aren't you?

(That's a rhetorical question.)

Mine stores 1100 gig with another 300gig coming along soon.
It's been doubling every 2 years.

Cheers. Please record 5000 gig of TV shows and watch them all, then
report back here when you're done.

High-grade VHS tapes will work (sort of). But for best results you
really need Super VHS tapes, which I have in abundance.

The only "catch" is the extra work required to drill a small pin-sized
hole in the bottom of the tape, but I've done that before. No big
deal.

Almost everything you said is FLAT WRONG. (If you don't know of what
you speak, then please do not speak. Or else, ask questions about
it. Or else, use wikipedia.)

- yes tapes wear; you got that right.
-
- tapes are random access (fast-forward to hour 2 and watch that tv
show; easily)
- it's not limited to 720p; It's ATSC-compliant, meaning it can record
the full 1920x1080 signal, same as Bluray/HD-DVD
- the high-end D-VHS units have program guides built-in and/or can be
used with external services

> It can't record more than 6 hours at
> a time (in analog) or 2 hours (in digital).

FALSE. - Using DF-480 tapes, it can record anywhere from 4 hours
(Bluray/HD-DVD quality) to 24 hours (DVD quality) or 40 hours (vhs
quality).

I hope that helps you better understand the format.

Depends on how you set your quality. For DVD quality it's 24 hours.
For VHS quality it's 40 hours.

How does a DVR compare? (I don't own one, so have no clue; from what
I've heard it's got similar time limits.)

No (the maximum time varies with the tape; upto 4 hours of HD).

Yes, you need to use high-grade VHS or S-VHS.

No. You don't modify the VCR. You modify the tape's case (drill an
extra hole). Easy.

WOW. Where did you buy that? (just curious). The largest one I
could find on amazon was only 1/4 that size (250 gig), and cost a LOT
more than what I spent on HDTV D-VHS VCR (almost 4 times as much).

I got my D-VHS deck (older model) for only $110.

How much did you spend?
