What do people think about this idea that the various Alien films have
undergone some sort of "post facto" "completion" by parties other than
the original filmmakers, as part of the upcoming Alien Quadrilogy set?

My opinion?

FUCK *THAT*.

If any of what I've heard is true, I'd be close to cancelling my
pre-order.

There is no place in cinema for external parties to "retouch" existing
works, just to make a buck.

I know that Sir Ridley re-cut his and it's rumoured that the final print of
Finchers Alien 3 is what Fincher had wanted it to be and that Alien
Resurrection is what Jean Piere Jeaunet wanted it to be. But I do agree with
you about the director being able to decide. However you should know that
most films you see are not how the director might want them to be. Only
independant films and films by megga giants like Cameron, Scott, etc, are
now cut how the director wants. Films like Red Dragon, etc, are not
nessisarily the version that the Director cut. At the end of the day the
producers decide what is and is not in the movie. That's why Paul Schraeder
(sp??) has been fired from The Exorcist IV, because his version of the film
is not the version that the producers wanted so they got rid of him. Also,
Ridley Scott was fired from Blade Runner because the producers and
financiers were not happy with the way the film was going.

But I do feel that with the Alien films that they will turn out good. I know
that SCott's in control of Alien, Cameron's in control of Aliens and Fincher
(who walked out of Alien 3 before they began editing allegedly) had a plan
for 3 and that's the plan they're following, I'm not sure about Resurrection
(But I can't imagine it being much worse.).

But at the end of the day I'm going to buy the Quadtrilogy because I love
the Alien films, it'll be great to see all of the extra features with the
documentaries, the new scenes, etc, there's over 40 hours worth of extras.

It would be nice if the director's could be in total control of what's in
and out of their movies, now-a-days the term people use is "my vision" but
fundamentally producers (who supply the money, etc, etc) can't let directors
(most of whom would be total strangers) be in charge of millions of their
dollars, there's just too much money involved.

Interstingly, I never rated SotL as a film, and thought Hannibal to be
*much* better, indeed to the point of Julianne Moore being a better
Starling than Jodi Foster was (I know I'm in a minority here ;-)

I found the end of the *book* of Hannibal quite interesting, but I
found the ending of the movie version far more in-line with both
movies, and accordingly better. I don't mean to detract from the book
when I say this, but I'm not *interested* in the *books*.

One thing of note... to bring this all back on topic (sort of), is
that the effect SotL has on me is rather akin to that which I feel
about Aliens: *sure* it's a good film, but I don't really feel like
*watching* it.

I would watch Hannibal *any* day, in preference to SotL, just as I
would sooner watch Alien or Alien3 than Aliens.

What do you make of *that*? ;-)

too

I always loved SotL - it had an atmosphere that spooked me (like Alien) - I
was reluctant to watch 'Hannibal' cos, apart from a few other chosen film
sequels, I am not confident that they can live up to the first film. But, I
had to watch Hannibal twice before I appreciated it.
Sorry though, Adam, I am going to have to admit, I still love Jodie and was
disappointed that she wasnt in Hannibal. To me, there was a rapport between
Foster and Hopkins that didnt come off with him and Moore.

I always love to read the books before the films - its a curiosity more than
anything. Its like I wanna see just how much the two will differ. If a
book awes me, then I cant wait to see the film, to see if they can capture
that awe on the big wide screen. Although I never read the Alien series
(dont hit me guys!!). The films are awesome enough for me :))
When you say you found 'Hannibal' "far more in line with both movies" - can
you expand on that one, please?
For me it was just a case of the ending to the book was way more
"psychological" because Hannibal ended up coveting Starling. Thats what
made it such a scary, horrific ending for me - the fact that Hannibal used
his psychiatric skills to reel Starling in. He always gave a false sense of
security in that, in SotL, he gave her some therapy along the way and then
duped us all by f***ing her up at the end of Hannibal. In the film, he lets
her go - dang!!!!! Surely this is just to allow the scope for another
film???

Why cant they just clone Starling for the 3rd one?? (sorry, couldnt resist
that one!!).

I love the kickass atmosphere of Aliens, the characters are brilliant and we
tend to remember alot of the "catchphrases" from that film ("they're coming
outta the walls, man!"), simply because of the content and myriad of
personalities, but it has to be Alien for me everytime. I am still on the
edge of my seat with that film!

What is it about Hannibal, that makes you prefer it, Adam?

OK, we differ there.

I'd rather watch myself being disembowelled than watch A:R.

(OK, not really ;-)

Yeah but this is the Alien movie ng and people are saying the don't enjoy
watching Aliens... doesn't jibe. Unless they mean it's too stressful cause
of the jacked-up tension for two hours.

Point taken, but you only have to look at earlier posts (hey, and most
recent!!) to see that alot of *fans* here actually detest AR(se).
To quote Adam it "appalling" -
The first time I went to see it, I nearly threw up it was so ridiculous (to
me) - thats my opinion. I am a major fan of the Alien trilogy and do not
regard AR as part of that series - its a farce. Silly, silly film.
As I have said on lots of occasions; the only good thing in that film (for
me) was what Ripley clone could do with her basketball.
The newborn is a sick monster and would have been brilliant in anything but
a precious Alien movie!!!

Its about everyone's right to a view and opinion and I do appreciate that
you have an opinion too. I cant count how many times I have watched
'Aliens', its one huge 'kickass' movie, but if I had to choose, its 'Alien'
for me everytime - oooooooh, the suspense!!

Sure, but some people want a bit of a challenge, a bit of a bite.

I've never claim that Aliens is *not* a very well made film. However
I just don't find it that interesting. I *did* for the first few
viewings, but I don't think it stands up to repeat viewings as well as
Alien and Alien3 does (my opinion only, natch).

I dislike A:R for completely different reasons. It's just an
appalling film, in almost every way a film *can* be appalling. The
only things I take out of it feeling positive, is SW's
characterisation of R8, and the fact that there are aliens in it.
Although even *that* is a tenuous one, as the treatment of the aliens
is... arseful ;-)

Alien and Aliens are two different (*completely* ~) films, though,
aren't they?
