You might also want to try your question over on
where many regulars do this sort
of recording frequently. It would be helpful to know
what selection of mics are available to you. And
whether there are any visual constraints to mic
placement. >> Stay informed about: cello and piano at wigmore hall (uk) |

Dan, phone me for a beer this evening if you get the chance (I'm off
to Italy tomorrow - any Ramp folks in Venice btw give me a shout!).
Most likely standing in the rain outside Dog and Duck or Pillars!
In a nutshell, the Wigmore Hall is quite small but obviously it sounds
um nice in its way - lots of chamber music / song recitals there. Pop
along beforehand and ask to have a look in, explaining what you're up
to. Personally, like Oleg's suggestion, I'd put a cardioid on the
cello (it's null to the piano perhaps if that works out ok with the
shot) and a couple cardioids over the open piano (maybe try to hire
pair of those dpa compact ones from Richmond?
If it has to be more discrete dpa lavs would do it (on bridge of
cello)

I'd suggest a Decca tree placed between the two musicians. Have the
tree in front of them by about 5 feet. Since it is more a clamber
amount, you won't need outriggers. You can fly omni's or cardiods at
the three points and get fine results. Good luck, and enjoy!

2 cards or omnis over the piano strings( depends on the hall acoustics) ,
1 card for the cello (about 2 feet away )
good pzms as schoeps blm may also work well for the grand piano
you can make it stereo image with cello in the middle

Hi Dan,
the most important factor is whether you are allowed to be in vision
or not.
If OK to see mics then there are numerous ways. I would concur with
Oleg (hello Oleg How R U). two on the piano, plus one for the cello. I
would also hang a stereo pair of some description further away for a
bit of 'space' if needed.
If nothing allowed in vision then you could go DAP hidden in piano
plus on bridge of cello, plus a spacey pair - or you could go very
carefully placed MS pair, or even slash out on a soundfield.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
Kindest regards to all,
Simon B

Hi Dan,
I agree with Oleg's advice on this one. I absolutely love the sound of
pianos when miced with a stereo pair and panned wide to give the
effect of being at the keys, however this is a technique most often
used on pop recordings rather than classical. That's an aesthetic
choice though. Do you know how far open the piano top will be? If it
is high stick, some large diaphragm cards are usually your best bet,
if it is short stick or all the way closed, the PZMs might work best.
Be sure not mic too close to hammers as it will accentuate their sharp
thud. I don't know the wigmore, but if it has a nice verb to it and
you are feeling adventuresome, it might be nice to place another card
10-20 ft away from both instruments and mix sparingly.
Best of luck,
Jesse

If you want an acoustic picture of the sound rather than a pop sound,
a stereo pair just in front and over the duet.
(Can you suspend the stereo pair?)
Add to that a cardiod spot mic on the floor pointing at the sound
hole of the cello. If the performer is looking at 6 o'clock, then the
mic would be at about 8 o'clock. Use just a little of the spot mic
as needed.

Yep, that's how I'd do it.

Hard to play anything other than solo Cello left handed. You wouldn't fit
into the ochestra very well<g>.
